25

Then the kingdom of heaven will be likedLuke 19:13 ten virgins who took their lamps1Or torches and went to meetech. 9:15; John 3:29; Rev. 19:7; 21:2, 9 the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish, and five werew[See ch. 24:45 above] wise. For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them, but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. As the bridegroomfch. 24:48; [ver. 19; Heb. 10:37; 2 Pet. 3:4, 9] was delayed, they all became drowsy and slept. ButgMark 13:35 at midnight there was a cry, ‘Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him. ’ Then all those virgins rose andh[Luke 12:35] trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out. ’ But the wise answered, saying, ‘Since there will not be enough for us and for you, go rather to the dealers and buy for yourselves. ’ 10 And while they were going to buy, the bridegroom came, andich. 24:44 those who were ready went in with him tojch. 22:2 the marriage feast, andkFor ver. 10-12, [Luke 13:25-27] the door was shut. 11 Afterward the other virgins came also, saying,l[ch. 7:22, 23] ‘Lord, lord, open to us. ’ 12 l[See ver. 11 above] But he answered, ‘Truly, I say to you, mch. 10:33; [2 Tim. 2:19] I do not know you. ’ 13 nch. 24:42 Watch therefore, for youo[ch. 24:50] know neither the day nor the hour.

The Parable of the Talents

14 pFor ver. 14-30, [Luke 19:12-27] Forq[Mark 13:34] it will be like a manrch. 21:33 going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted to them his property. 15 To one he gave fivesch. 18:24 talents, to another two, to another one,t[Rom. 12:6; 1 Cor. 12:11; Eph. 4:7; 1 Pet. 4:10] to each according to his ability. Then her[See ver. 14 above] went away. 16 He who had received the five talents went at once and traded with them, and he made five talents more. 17 So also he who had the two talents made two talents more. 18 But he who had received the one talent went andu[ch. 13:44] dug in the ground and hid his master's money. 19 Nowv[ver. 5] after a long time the master of those servants came andwch. 18:23; Rom. 14:12; [Luke 16:2] settled accounts with them. 20 And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five talents more, saying, ‘Master, you delivered to me five talents; here I have made five talents more. ’ 21 His master said to him, ‘Well done, good andxver. 23; ch. 24:45 faithful servant.yLuke 16:10; 1 Cor. 4:2; [1 Tim. 3:13] You have been faithful over a little;zch. 24:47 I will set you over much. Enter intoaHeb. 12:2; [John 15:11] the joy of your master. ’ 22 And he also who had the two talents came forward, saying, ‘Master, you delivered to me two talents; here I have made two talents more. ’ 23 His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master. ’ 24 He also who had received the one talent came forward, saying, ‘Master, I knew you to beb1 Sam. 25:3 a hard man, reapingc[2 Cor. 8:12] where you did not sow, and gathering where you scattered no seed, 25 so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Heredch. 20:14 you have what is yours. ’ 26 But his master answered him, ‘Youech. 18:32; Prov. 20:4; Rom. 12:11 wicked andech. 18:32; Prov. 20:4; Rom. 12:11 slothful servant! You knew that I reap where I have not sowed and gather where I scattered no seed? 27 Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have received what was my own with interest. 28 So take the talent from him and give it to him who has the ten talents. 29 f[Luke 12:48]; See ch. 13:12 For to everyone who has will more be given, and he will have an abundance. But from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. 30 AndgSee ch. 8:12 casth[Luke 17:10] the worthless servant into the outer darkness.
