1 After this Jesus went about in Galilee. He would not go about in Judea, becausepch. 5:18; 8:37, 40; 11:53 the Jews1Or Judeans were seeking to kill him. 2 Nowqch. 5:1; 6:4 the Jews' Feast ofrSee Lev. 23:34 Booths was at hand. 3 sver. 5, 10; See Matt. 12:46 So his brothers said to him, “Leave here and go to Judea, that your disciples also may see the works you are doing. 4 For no one works in secret if he seeks to be known openly. If you do these things,t[ch. 14:22; 18:20] show yourself to the world. ” 5 u[Matt. 13:57; Mark 3:21] For not evenvver. 3, 10 his brothers believed in him. 6 Jesus said to them, w[ver. 8, 30]; See ch. 2:4 “My time has not yet come, but your time is always here. 7 The world cannot hate you, butxch. 15:18, 24 it hates me because I testify about it thatych. 3:19; [Col. 1:21; 1 John 3:12] its works are evil. 8 You go up to the feast. I am not going up to this feast, forzSee ch. 2:4 my time has not yet fully come. ” 9 After saying this, he remained in Galilee.
10 But afteraver. 3, 5 his brothers had gone up to the feast, then he also went up, not publicly but in private. 11 bver. 1 The Jewscch. 11:56 were looking for him at the feast, and saying, “Where is he? ” 12 And there was muchdver. 32 muttering about him among the people.e[ver. 40-43] While some said, “He is a good man, ” others said, “No,fver. 47 he is leading the people astray. ” 13 Yetgch. 19:38; 20:19; [ch. 9:22; 12:42] for fear of the Jews no one spoke openly of him.
14 About the middle of the feast Jesus went uphver. 28 into the temple and began teaching. 15 The Jews thereforei[ver. 46; Luke 2:47; 4:22; Acts 4:13] marveled, saying, “How is it that this man has learning,1Or this man knows his letters when he has never studied? ” 16 So Jesus answered them, jch. 8:28; 12:49; 14:10, 24; [ch. 3:34] “My teaching is not mine, but hiskSee ch. 3:17 who sent me. 17 l[ch. 8:31, 32; 14:21, 23] If anyone's will is to do God's will,m[ch. 8:43; Ps. 25:9; Dan. 12:10; Phil. 3:15] he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether InSee ch. 5:30 am speaking on my own authority. 18 The one who speaks on his own authorityoch. 5:41; 8:50 seeks his own glory, but the one who seeks the glory of him who sent him is true, and in him there is no falsehood. 19 pver. 23; See ch. 1:17 Has not Moses given you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law.qver. 1 Why do you seek to kill me? ” 20 The crowd answered, rch. 8:48, 52; 10:20; [Matt. 11:18; Mark 3:22; Luke 7:33] “You have a demon! Who is seeking to kill you? ” 21 Jesus answered them, “I didsver. 23; ch. 5:2-9 one deed, and you all marvel at it. 22 tLev. 12:3 Moses gave you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, butuGen. 17:10 from the fathers), and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath. 23 If on the Sabbath a man receives circumcision, so that the law of Moses may not be broken, vch. 5:16; See Matt. 12:2 are you angry with me because on the Sabbath I made a man's whole body well? 24 wch. 8:15; [Isa. 11:3; 2 Cor. 10:7]; See Deut. 1:16, 17 Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment. ”
25 Some of the people of Jerusalem therefore said, “Is not this the man whomxver. 1 they seek to kill? 26 And here he is,ych. 18:20 speaking openly, and they say nothing to him! Can it be thatzver. 48 the authorities really know that this is the Christ? 27 Buta[ch. 6:42; 8:14, 19; 9:29] we knowbch. 19:9 where this man comes from, and when the Christ appears,c[ver. 42] no one will know where he comes from. ” 28 So Jesus proclaimed, dver. 14 as he taught in the temple, a[See ver. 27 above] “You know me, and you know where I come from? They said,oMatt. 12:23 “When the Christ appears, will he do more signs than this man has done? ”
32 The Pharisees heard the crowdpver. 12 muttering these things about him, and the chief priests and Pharisees sentqver. 45, 46 officers to arrest him. 33 Jesus then said, rch. 12:35; 13:33; 14:19; 16:16-19 “I will be with you a little longer, and thensch. 16:5 I am going to him who sent me. 34 tch. 8:21; 13:33 You will seek me and you will not find me. 37 yLev. 23:36; Num. 29:35; Neh. 8:18 On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, zIsa. 55:1; See ch. 4:14 “If anyone thirsts, let himaSee ch. 6:35 come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me,b[Isa. 12:3; Ezek. 47:1] as1Or let him come to me, and let him who believes in me drink. 40 When they heard these words,jSee ver. 31 some of the people said, “This really iskch. 1:21; 6:14; See Matt. 21:11 the Prophet. ” 41 Others said, “This islver. 26 the Christ. ” But some said,m[ver. 52; ch. 1:46] “Is the Christ to come from Galilee? 42 Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comesn[Ps. 89:3, 4]; See Matt. 1:1 from the offspring of David, and comesoMic. 5:2; Matt. 2:1, 5; Luke 2:4 from Bethlehem, the villagep1 Sam. 16:1 where David was? ” 43 So there wasqch. 9:16; 10:19; [ver. 12] a division among the people over him. 44 rver. 30 Some of them wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him.
