1 But a man named Ananias, with his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property, 2 and with his wife's knowledgevver. 3 he kept back for himself some of the proceeds and brought only a part of it andwch. 4:35, 37 laid it at the apostles' feet. 3 But Peter said, “Ananias, why hasx[Luke 22:3; John 13:2, 27] Satan filled your heart to liey[ver. 4, 9] to the Holy Spirit andzver. 2 to keep back for yourself part of the proceeds of the land? 4 While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not at your disposal? Why is it that you have contrived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to men buta[ver. 3, 9] to God. ” 5 When Ananias heard these words, heb[Ezek. 11:13] fell down and breathed his last. Andcver. 11 great fear came upon all who heard of it. 6 The young men rose andd[ch. 8:2; Ezek. 29:5; John 19:40] wrapped him up and carried him out and buried him.
7 After an interval of about three hours his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. 8 And Peter said to her, “Tell me whether you sold the land for so much. ” And she said, “Yes, for so much. ” 9 But Peter said to her, “How is it that you have agreed togethere[ch. 15:10; 1 Cor. 10:9] to testf[ver. 3, 4] the Spirit of the Lord? Behold, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out. ” 10 Immediately she fell down at his feet and breathed her last. When the young men came in they found her dead, and they carried her out and buried her beside her husband. 11 Andgver. 5 great fear came upon the whole church and upon all who heard of these things.
12 Now many signs and wonders were regularly done among the peoplehch. 2:43; 4:30; 14:3; 19:11; Mark 16:20; Rom. 15:19; 2 Cor. 12:12; Heb. 2:4 by the hands of the apostles. Now when the high priest came, and those who were with him, they called together the council and all the senate of Israel and sent to the prison to have them brought. 22 But when the officers came, they did not find them in the prison, so they returned and reported, 23 “We found the prison securely locked and the guards standing at the doors, but when we opened them we found no one inside. ” 24 Now whenaver. 26; See ch. 4:1 the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these words, they were greatly perplexed about them, wondering what this would come to. 25 And someone came and told them, “Look! 27 And when they had brought them, they set them before the council. And the high priest questioned them, 28 saying, ech. 4:18 “We strictly charged you not to teach in this name, yet here you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and youfch. 2:23, 36; 3:15; 4:10; 7:52; Matt. 27:25 intend to bring this man's blood upon us. ” 29 But Peter and the apostles answered,g[ch. 4:19, 20] “We must obey God rather than men. 30 hSee ch. 3:13 The God of our fathersiSee ch. 2:24 raised Jesus, jch. 10:39; Gal. 3:13; See Luke 24:20 whom you killed by hanging him onkch. 13:29; 1 Pet. 2:24 a tree. 31 God exaltedlSee ch. 2:33 him at his right hand asmSee ch. 3:15 Leader andnSee Luke 2:11 Savior,oLuke 24:47; See Luke 5:32 to givepch. 11:18; 2 Tim. 2:25; [Rom. 2:4] repentance to Israel andoLuke 24:47; See Luke 5:32 forgiveness of sins. 32 AndqSee Luke 24:48 we are witnesses to these things, andr[ch. 15:28; John 15:26, 27; Heb. 2:4; 1 John 5:7] so is the Holy Spirit,sSee ch. 2:4 whom God has given to those who obey him. ”
33 When they heard this, theytch. 7:54; [ch. 2:37] were enraged and wanted to kill them. 34 But a Pharisee in the council nameduch. 22:3 Gamaliel,vSee Luke 5:17 a teacher of the law held in honor by all the people, stood up and gave orders to put the men outside for a little while. 35 And he said to them, “Men of Israel, take care what you are about to do with these men. 36 Forw[ch. 21:38] before these days Theudas rose up,xch. 8:9; [Gal. 2:6; 6:3] claiming to be somebody, and a number of men, about four hundred, joined him.
