Peter and John Before the Council

4

And as they were speaking to the people, the priests andlch. 5:24, 26; Luke 22:4, 52; [1 Chr. 9:11; Neh. 11:11] the captain of the temple andmSee Matt. 22:23 the Sadducees came upon them, greatly annoyed because they were teaching the people and proclaimingnch. 17:18; [ch. 3:15] in Jesus the resurrection from the dead. And they arrested them andoSee Luke 21:12 put them in custody until the next day, for it was already evening. But many of those who had heard the word believed, andp[ch. 2:41] the number of the men came to about five thousand.

On the next day their rulers and elders and scribes gathered together in Jerusalem, withqLuke 3:2; John 18:13, 24 Annas the high priest andrSee Matt. 26:3 Caiaphas and John and Alexander, and all who were of the high-priestly family. And when they had set them in the midst, they inquired,s[Matt. 21:23] “By what power ort[ver. 10] by what name did you do this? ” Then Peter,uSee Matt. 10:20 filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers of the people and elders, if we are being examined todayvch. 3:7, 8 concerning a good deed done to a crippled man, by what means this man has been healed, 10 let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel thatwch. 3:6 by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified,xSee ch. 2:24 whom God raised from the dead—by him this man is standing before you well. 11 ySee Ps. 118:22 This Jesus is the stone that waszMark 9:12; Luke 23:11 rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone. 12 And there isach. 13:26; 28:28; John 4:22; Heb. 2:3; Jude 3 salvationb[1 Tim. 2:5] in no one else, forc[Gal. 1:7] there is no otherdch. 10:43; Luke 24:47; John 20:31 name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved. ”

13 e[John 7:15] Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they were astonished. And they recognized that they had been with Jesus. 14 But seeing the man who was healedfch. 3:11 standing beside them,g[Luke 21:15] they had nothing to say in opposition. 15 But when they had commanded them to leave the council, they conferred with one another, 16 saying,h[John 11:47; 12:19] “What shall we do with these men? For thativer. 21; ch. 3:9, 10 a notable sign has been performed through them is evident to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it. 17 But in order that it may spread no further among the people, let us warn themjch. 5:28, 40 to speak no more to anyone in this name. ” 18 So they called them and charged them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. 19 But Peter and John answered them, kch. 5:29 “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge, 20 forl[Amos 3:8; John 15:27; 1 Cor. 9:16] we cannot but speak of whatmch. 22:15; 1 John 1:1, 3 we have seen and heard. ” 21 And when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding no way to punish them, nch. 5:13, 26; [Matt. 21:26, 46; Mark 11:32; Luke 20:6, 19; 22:2] because of the people, for all were praising Godoch. 3:7, 8 for what had happened. 22 For the man on whom this sign of healing was performed was more than forty years old.

The Believers Pray for Boldness

23 When they were released, they went to their friends and reported what the chief priests and the elders had said to them. 24 And when they heard it, they lifted their voicespSee ch. 1:14 together to God and said, “Sovereign Lord,qEx. 20:11; 2 Chr. 2:12; Neh. 9:6; Ps. 102:25; 124:8; 134:3; 146:6 who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and everything in them, 25 who through the mouth of our father David, your servant,1Or child; also verses 27, 30 said by the Holy Spirit,
