1:1 James, a bond-servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, To the twelve tribes who are dispersed abroad: Greetings.
1:2 Consider it all joy, my brethrenbrothers and sisters, when you encounter various trials,
1:7 For that manperson ought not to expect that he will receive anything from the Lord,
1:9 ButNow the brother or sister of humble circumstances is to glory in his high position;
1:10 andbut the rich manperson is to glory in his humiliation, because like flowering grass he will pass away.
1:11 For the sun rises with aits scorching windheat and withers the grass; and its flower falls off and the beauty of its appearance is destroyed; so tooalso the rich manperson, in the midst of his pursuits, will fadedie awayout.
1:13 LetNo no one is to say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone.
1:15 Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when sinit ishas accomplishedrun its course, it brings forth death.
1:16 Do not be deceived, my beloved brethrenbrothers and sisters.
1:18 In the exercise of His will He broughtgave us forthbirth by the word of truth, so that we would be a kind of first fruits among His creatures.
1:19 ThisYou youknow knowthis, my beloved brethrenbrothers and sisters. ButNow everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger;
1:20 for thea man’s anger of man does not achievebring about the righteousness of God.
1:21 Therefore, puttingridding asideyourselves of all filthiness and all that remains of wickedness, in humility receive the word implanted, which is able to save your souls.
1:22 But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merelyjust hearers who deludedeceive themselves.
1:25 But one who lookshas looked intently at the perfect law, the law of libertyfreedom, and abideshas bycontinued in it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an effectualactive doer, this manperson will be blessed in what he does.
1:26 If anyone thinks himself to be religious, and yet does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this manperson’s religion is worthless.
2:1 My brethrenbrothers and sisters, do not hold your faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ with an attitude of personal favoritism.
2:2 For if a man comes into your assembly with a gold ring and is dressed in finebright clothes, and there also comes in a poor man in dirty clothes also comes in,
2:3 and you pay special attention to the one who is wearing the finebright clothes, and say, “You sit here in a good place,” and you say to the poor man, “You stand over there, or sit down by my footstool,”
2:5 Listen, my beloved brethrenbrothers and sisters: did God not God choose the poor of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which He promised to those who love Him?
2:7 Do they not blaspheme the fairgood name by which you have been called?
2:9 But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the lawLaw as transgressorsviolators.
2:10 For whoever keeps the whole lawLaw, and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all.
2:11 For He who said, “Do not commit adultery,” also said, “Do not commit murder.” Now if you do not commit adultery, but do commit murder, you have become a transgressorviolator of the lawLaw.
2:12 So speak, and so act, as those who are to be judged by the law of libertyfreedom.
2:14 What use is it, my brethrenbrothers and sisters, if someone says he has faith, but he has no works? Can that faith save him?
2:16 and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and be filled,” and yet you do not give them what is necessary for their body, what use is that?
2:17 EvenIn sothe same way, faith also, if it has no works, is dead, being by itself.
2:20 But are you willing to recognizeacknowledge, you foolish fellowperson, that faith without works is useless?
2:21 Was notour father Abraham ournot father justified by works when he offered up Isaac his son Isaac on the altar?
2:23 and the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “And Abraham believed God, and it was reckonedcredited to him as righteousness,” and he was called thea friend of God.
2:24 You see that a manperson is justified by works and not by faith alone.
2:25 In the same way, was not Rahab the harlotprostitute alsonot justified by works also when she received the messengers and sent them out by another way?
3:1 LetDo not manybecome ofteachers youin becomelarge teachersnumbers, my brethrenbrothers, knowingsince thatyou asknow suchthat we who are teachers will incur a stricter judgment.
3:2 For we all stumble in many ways. If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to bridlerein in the whole body as well.
3:3 Now if we put the bits into the horses’ mouths so that they will obey us, we direct their entirewhole body as well.
3:4 Look at the ships also,too: though they are so greatlarge and are driven by strong winds, they are stillnevertheless directed by a very small rudder wherever the inclination of the pilot desiresdetermines.
3:6 And the tongue is a fire, the very world of iniquityunrighteousness; the tongue is set among our membersbody’s parts as that which defiles the entirewhole body, and sets on fire the course of our life, and is set on fire by hell.
3:8 But no one among mankind can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil, and full of deadly poison.
3:9 With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse menpeople, who have been made in the likeness of God;
3:10 from the same mouth come both blessing and cursing. My brethrenbrothers and sisters, these things oughtshould not to be this way.
3:11 Does a fountainspring send out from the same opening both fresh and bitter water?
3:12 Can a fig tree, my brethrenbrothers and sisters, producebear olives, or a vine producebear figs? Nor can salt water produce fresh.
3:17 But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceablepeace-loving, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwaveringimpartial, withoutfree of hypocrisy.
3:18 And the seed whose fruit isof righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.
4:1 What is the source of quarrels and conflicts among you? Is not the source not your pleasures that wage war in your membersbody’s parts?
4:2 You lust and do not have;, so you commit murder. YouAnd you are envious and cannot obtain;, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have because you do not ask.
4:3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask with the wrong motives, so that you may spend itwhat you request on your pleasures.
4:4 You adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Therefore whoever wisheswants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.
4:5 Or do you think that the Scripture speakssays to no purpose:, “He jealously desires the Spirit whichwhom He has made to dwell in us”?
4:7 Submit therefore to God. ResistBut resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
4:8 DrawCome nearclose to God and He will drawcome nearclose to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
4:9 Be miserable, and mourn, and weep; let your laughter be turned into mourning, and your joy tointo gloom.
4:11 Do not speak against one another, brethrenbrothers and sisters. HeThe one who speaks against a brother or sister, or judges his brother or sister, speaks against the law and judges the law; but if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge of it.
4:12 There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the One who is able to save and to destroy; but who are you, whojudging judge your neighbor?
4:14 Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. YouFor you are just a vapor that appears for a little while, and then vanishes away.
4:17 Therefore,So tofor one who knows the right thing to do and does not do it, tofor him it is sin.
5:1 Come now, you rich people, weep and howl for your miseries which are coming upon you.
5:3 Your gold and your silver have rusted;corroded, and their rustcorrosion will beserve as a witnesstestimony against you and will consume your flesh like fire. It is in the last days that you have stored up your treasure!
5:4 Behold, the pay of the laborers who mowed your fields, and which has been withheld by you, cries out against you; and the outcry of those who did the harvesting has reached the ears of the Lord of Sabaotharmies.
5:5 You have lived luxuriouslyfor pleasure on the earth and ledlived a life of wanton pleasureluxuriously; you have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter.
5:6 You have condemned and put to death the righteous manperson; he doesoffers notyou resistno youresistance.
5:7 Therefore be patient, brethrenbrothers and sisters, until the coming of the Lord. The farmer waits for the precious produce of the soil, being patient about it, until it gets the early and late rains.
5:9 Do not complain, brethrenbrothers and sisters, against one another, so that you yourselves may not be judged; behold, the Judge is standing right at the door.
5:10 As an example, brethrenbrothers and sisters, of suffering and patience, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.
5:12 But above all, my brethrenbrothers and sisters, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath; but your yes is to be yes, and your no, no, so that you maydo not fall under judgment.
5:15 and the prayer offeredof in faith will restore the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up, and if he has committed sins, they will be forgiven him.
5:16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed. TheA effective prayer of a righteous manperson, when it is brought about, can accomplish much.
5:19 My brethrenbrothers and sisters, if anyanyone among you strays from the truth and onesomeone turns him back,
5:20 let him know that hethe one who turnshas turned a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.
