1:1 The words of Amos, who was among the sheepherders from Tekoa, which he envisionedsaw in visions concerning Israel in the days of Uzziah king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam son of Joash, king of Israel, two years before the earthquake.
1:2 HeAnd he said, “The Lord roars from Zion, And from Jerusalem He utters His voice; And the shepherds’ pasture grounds mourn, And the summit of Carmel dries up.”
1:3 ThusThis saysis what the Lord, says: “For three transgressionsoffenses of Damascus, and for four, I will not revoke its punishment, Because they threshed Gilead with implementsiron of sharp ironsledges.
1:4 So I will send fire upon the house of Hazael, And it will consume the citadels of Ben-hadad.
1:5 I will also break the gate bar of Damascus, And cuteliminate offevery the inhabitant from the valleyValley of Aven, AndAs well as him who holds the scepter, from Beth-eden; So the people of Aram will gobe exiled to Kir,” Says the Lord.
1:6 ThusThis saysis what the Lord, says: “For three transgressionsoffenses of Gaza, and for four, I will not revoke its punishment, Because they deportedled into exile an entire population To deliverturn itthem upover to Edom.
1:7 So I will send fire uponon the wall of Gaza And it will consume her citadels.
1:8 I will also cuteliminate offevery the inhabitant from Ashdod, AndAs well as him who holds the scepter, from Ashkelon; And I will evendirect unleash My power uponagainst Ekron, And the remnant of the Philistines will perish,” Says the Lord God.
1:9 ThusThis saysis what the Lord, says: “For three transgressionsoffenses of Tyre, and for four, I will not revoke its punishment, Because they deliveredturned up an entire population over to Edom And did not remember the covenant of brotherhood.
1:10 So I will send fire uponon the wall of Tyre, And it will consume her citadels.”
1:11 ThusThis saysis what the Lord, says: “For three transgressionsoffenses of Edom, and for four, I will not revoke its punishment, Because he pursued his brother with the sword, WhileAnd he stifled his compassion; His anger also tore continually, And he maintained his fury forever.
1:13 ThusThis saysis what the Lord, says: “For three transgressionsoffenses of the sons of Ammon, and for four, I will not revoke its punishment, Because they ripped open the pregnant women of Gilead In order to enlarge their borders.
1:14 So I will kindle a fire on the wall of Rabbah, And it will consume her citadels Amid war cries on the day of battle, And amid a storm on the day of tempest.
2:1 ThusThis saysis what the Lord, says: “For three transgressionsoffenses of Moab, and for four, I will not revoke its punishment, Because he burned the bones of the king of Edom to lime.
2:2 So I will send fire upon Moab And it will consume the citadels of Kerioth; And Moab will die amid tumultthe panic of battle, WithAmid war cries and the sound of a trumpet.
2:3 I will also cuteliminate off the judge from her midst And slay all her princesleaders with him,” says the Lord.
2:4 ThusThis saysis what the Lord, says: “For three transgressionsoffenses of Judah, and for four, I will not revoke its punishment, Because they rejected the lawLaw of the Lord And have not kept His statutes; Their lies also have led them astray, Those after which their fathers walkedfollowed.
2:5 So I will send fire upon Judah, And it will consume the citadels of Jerusalem.”
2:6 ThusThis saysis what the Lord, says: “For three transgressionsoffenses of Israel, and for four, I will not revoke its punishment, Because they sell the righteous for money, And the needy for a pair of sandals.
2:7 These who panttrample after the veryhead dust of the earthhelpless onto the headdust of the helplessearth Also turndivert aside the way of the humble; And a man and his father resort to the same girl InSo orderas to profane My holy name.
2:8 OnAnd on garments takenseized as pledges they stretch out beside every altar, And in the house of their God they drink the wine of those who have been fined.
2:9 “Yet it was I who destroyed the Amorite before them, Though his height was like the height of cedars And he was as strong as the oaks; I evenalso destroyed his fruit above and his rootroots below.
2:10 ItAnd it was I who brought you up from the land of Egypt, And I led you in the wilderness for forty years ThatSo that you might take possession of the land of the Amorite.
2:11 Then I raised up some of your sons to be prophets, And some of your young men to be Nazirites. Is this not so, Oyou sons of Israel?” declares the Lord.
2:12 “But you made the Nazirites drink wine, And you commanded the prophets, saying, ‘You shall not prophesy!’
2:13 Behold, I am weightedmaking downa rut in the ground beneath you, AsJust as a wagon ismakes weighteda downrut when filled with sheaves.
2:14 FlightRefuge will perishbe lost from the swift, And the stalwartstrong will not strengthen his power, Nor the mightywarrior man save his life.
2:15 HeThe one who grasps the bow will not stand his ground, The swift of foot will not escape, Nor will hethe one who rides the horse save his life.
2:16 Even the bravest among the warriors will flee naked inon that day,” declares the Lord.
3:2 “You only have I chosenknown among all the families of the earth; Therefore I will punish you for all your iniquitieswrongdoing.”
3:3 Do two menpeople walk together unless they have madeagreed anto appointmentmeet?
3:5 Does a bird fall into a trap on the ground when there is no baitdevice in it? Does a trap spring up from the earth when it captures nothing at all?
3:6 If a trumpet is blown in a city, will not the people not tremble? If a calamitydisaster occurs in a city, has not the Lord donenot brought it about?
3:7 Surely Certainly the Lord God does nothing Unless He reveals His secret counselplan To His servants the prophets.
3:8 A lion has roared! Who will not fear? The Lord God has spoken! Who can do anything but prophesy?
3:9 Proclaim on the citadels in Ashdod and on the citadels in the land of Egypt and say, “Assemble yourselves on the mountains of Samaria and see the great tumultspanic within her and the oppressions in her midst.
3:10 But they do not know how to do what is right,” declares the Lord, “these who hoardstore up violence and devastation in their citadels.”
3:11 Therefore, thusthis saysis what the Lord God, says: “An enemy, even one surrounding the land, Will pulltake down your strengthfortifications from you, And your citadels will be looted.”
3:12 ThusThis saysis what the Lord, says: “Just as the shepherd snatches from the lion’s mouth a couple of legs or a piece of an ear, So will the sons of Israel dwellingliving in Samaria be snatched away— With the corner of a bed and the cover of a couch!
3:13 Hear and testify against the house of Jacob,” Declares the Lord God, the God of hostsarmies.
3:14 “For on the day that I punish Israel’s transgressionsoffenses, I will also punish the altars of Bethel; The horns of the altar will be cut off, And they will fall to the ground.
3:15 I will also smitestrike the winter house together with the summer house; The houses of ivory will also perish, And the great houses will come to an end,” Declares the Lord.
4:1 Hear this word, you cows of Bashan who are on the mountain of Samaria, Who oppressexploit the poor, who crushoppress the needy, WhoAnd say to yourtheir husbands, “Bring now, that we may drink!”
4:2 The Lord God has sworn by His holiness, “BeholdFor behold, the days are coming upon you When they will take you away with meat hooks, And the last of you with fish hooks.
4:3 You will go out through breachesholes in the walls, EachOne onein straightfront beforeof herthe other, And you will be casthurled to Harmon,” declares the Lord.
4:4 “Enter Bethel and transgressdo wrong; In Gilgal multiply transgressionwrongdoing! Bring your sacrifices every morning, Your tithes every three days.
4:5 Offer a thankthanksgiving offering also from that which is leavened, And proclaim freewillvoluntary offerings, make them known. For so you love to do, you sons of Israel,” Declares the Lord God.
4:6 “But I gave you also cleanness of teeth in all your cities, And lack of bread in all your places,; Yet you have not returned to Me,” declares the Lord.
4:7 “Furthermore, I withheld the rain from you While there were still three months until harvest. Then I would send rain on one city, AndBut on another city I would not send rain; One part would be rained on, While the part not rained on would dry up.
4:8 So the people of two or three cities would stagger to another city to drink water, But would not be satisfied; Yet you have not returned to Me,” declares the Lord.
4:9 “I smotestruck you with scorching wind and mildew; AndThe the caterpillar was devouring Your many gardens and vineyards, fig trees and olive trees; Yet you have not returned to Me,” declares the Lord.
4:10 “I sent a plague among you afteras thein manner of Egypt; I slewkilled your young men bywith the sword, along with your captured horses, And I made the stench of your camp rise up in your nostrils; Yet you have not returned to Me,” declares the Lord.
4:11 “I overthrew you, as God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, And you were like a firebrandlog snatched from a blazefire; Yet you have not returned to Me,” declares the Lord.
4:12 “Therefore thusso I will do to you, O Israel; Because I will do this to you, Prepare to meet your God, O Israel.”
4:13 For behold, He who forms mountains and creates the wind, And declares to mana person what are His thoughts, He who makes dawn into darkness And treads on the high places of the earth, The Lord God of hostsarmies is His name.
5:1 Hear this word which I takeam taking up for you as a dirgesong of mourning, O house of Israel:
5:2 She has fallen, she will not rise again— The virgin Israel. She lies neglectedunnoticed on her land; There is noneno one to raise her up.
5:3 For thusthis saysis what the Lord God, says: “The city which goes forth a thousand strong Will have a hundred left, And the one which goes forth a hundred strong Will have ten left to the house of Israel.”
5:4 For thusthis saysis what the Lord says to the house of Israel,: “Seek Me so that you may live.
5:5 But do not resort to Bethel And do not come to Gilgal, Nor cross over to Beersheba; For Gilgal will certainly go into captivity And Bethel will come to troublenothing.
5:6 Seek the Lord so that you may live, Or He will break forththrough like a fire, O house of Joseph, And it will consume with noneno one to quenchextinguish it for Bethel,
5:7 For those who turn justice into wormwood, And castthrow righteousness down to the earth.”
5:8 He who made the Pleiades and Orion, And changes deep darkness into morning, Who also darkens day into night, Who calls for the waters of the sea And pours them out on the surface of the earth, The Lord is His name.
5:9 It is He who flashesmakes forthdestruction withflash destruction upon the strong, So that destruction comes upon the fortress.
5:10 They hate him who reprovesrebukes in the gate, And they abhordespise him who speaks with integrity.
5:11 Therefore because you impose heavy rent on the poor And exacttake a tribute of grain from them, Though you have built houses of well-hewncut stone, Yet you will not live in them; You have planted pleasantbeautiful vineyards, yet you will not drink their wine.
5:12 For I know your transgressionsoffenses are many and your sins are great, You who distressare hostile to the righteous and accept bribes, And turn asideaway the poor infrom justice at the gate.
5:13 Therefore at such a time the prudent person keeps silentquiet, forbecause it is an evil time.
5:14 Seek good and not evil, so that you may live; And thusso may the Lord God of hostsarmies be with you, Just as you have said!
5:15 Hate evil, love good, And establish justice in the gate! Perhaps the Lord God of hostsarmies MayWill be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.
5:16 Therefore thusthis saysis what the Lord God of hostsarmies, the Lord, says: “There is wailingmourning in all the plazaspublic squares, And in all the streets they say, ‘AlasOh no! AlasOh no!’ They also call the farmer to mourning And professional mourners to lamentationmourning rites.
5:17 And in all the vineyards there is wailingmourning, Because I will pass through the midst of you,” says the Lord.
5:18 Alas,Woe to you who are longing for the day of the Lord, For what purpose will the day of the Lord be to you? It will be darkness and not light;
5:19 As when a man flees from a lion And a bear meetsconfronts him, Or he goes home, leans with his hand against the wall, And a snake bites him.
5:20 Will not the day of the Lord not be darkness instead of light, Even gloom with no brightness in it?
5:21 “I hate, I reject your festivals, Nor do I delight in your solemnfestive assemblies.
5:22 Even though you offer up to Me burnt offerings and your grain offerings, I will not accept them; And I will not even look at the peace offerings of your fatlingsfattened oxen.
5:24 But let justice roll downout like waters, And righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.
5:25 “Did you present Me with sacrifices and grain offerings in the wilderness for forty years, O house of Israel?
5:27 Therefore, I will make you go into exile beyond Damascus,” says the Lord, whose name is the God of hostsarmies.
6:1 Woe to those who are atcarefree ease in Zion, And to those who feel secure inon the mountain of Samaria, The distinguisheddignitaries men of the foremost of nations, To whom the house of Israel comes.
6:3 DoAre you putpostponing off the day of calamitydisaster, And would you bring near the seat of violence?
6:4 Those who reclinelie on beds of ivory, And sprawllounge around on their couches, And eat lambs from the flock, And calves from the midst of the stallfattened cattle,
6:6 Who drink wine from sacrificialsacred bowls While they anoint themselves with the finest of oils, Yet they have not grieved over the ruincollapse of Joseph.
6:7 Therefore, they will now go into exile at the head of the exiles, And the sprawlers’revelry banquetingof those who lounge around will passcome awayto an end.
6:8 The Lord God has sworn by Himself, the Lord God of hostsarmies has declared: “I loathe the arrogance of Jacob, And detest his citadels; Therefore I will delivergive up the city and all it contains.”
6:10 Then one’s uncle, or his undertaker, will lift him up to carry out his bones from the house, and he will say to the one who is in the innermost part of the house, “Is anyone else with you?” And that one will say, “No one.” Then he will answer, “Keep quiet.! For the name of the Lord is not to be mentioned.”
6:11 For behold, the Lord is going to command that the great house be smashed to pieces, and the small house to fragmentsrubble.
6:12 Do horses run on rocks? Or does one plow them with oxen? Yet you have turned justice into poison, And the fruit of righteousness into wormwood,
6:14 “For behold, I am going to raise up a nation against you, OHouse house of Israel,” declares the Lord God of hostsarmies, “And they will afflicttorment you from the entrance of Hamath To the brook of the Arabah.”
7:1 ThusThis is what the Lord God showed me, and behold, He was forming a locust-swarm of locusts when the spring crop began to sprout. And behold, the spring crop was after the king’s mowing.
7:2 And it came about, when it had finished eating the vegetation of the land, that I said, “Lord God, please pardon! How can Jacob stand,? For he is small?”.”
7:3 The Lord changedrelented Hisof mind about this. “It shall not be,” said the Lord.
7:4 ThusSo the Lord God showed me, and behold, the Lord God was calling to contend with them by fire, and it consumed the great deep and began to consume the farm landfarmland.
7:5 Then I said, “Lord God, please stop! How can Jacob stand,? forFor he is small?”.”
7:6 The Lord changedrelented Hisof mind about this. “This too shall not be,” said the Lord God.
7:7 ThusSo He showed me, and behold, the Lord was standing by a vertical wall with a plumb line in His hand.
7:8 TheAnd the Lord said to me, “What do you see, Amos?” And I said, “A plumb line.” Then the Lord said, “Behold I am about to put a plumb line In the midst of My people Israel. I will not spare them noany longer.
7:9 The high places of Isaac will bebecome desolateddeserted, And the sanctuaries of Israel laidwill wastebe in ruins. Then I will rise up against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.”
7:11 For thusthis is what Amos says,: ‘Jeroboam will die by the sword, and Israel will certainly go from its land into exile.’ ”
7:12 Then Amaziah said to Amos, “Go, you seer, flee away to the land of Judah; and there eat bread there and there do your prophesying there!
7:13 But nodo longernot prophesy at Bethel any longer, for it is a sanctuary of the king and a royal residence.”
7:15 But the Lord took me from following the flock, and the Lord said to me, ‘Go prophesy to My people Israel.’
7:16 NowSo now hear the word of the Lord: you are saying, ‘You shall not prophesy against Israel nor shall you speakprophesy against the house of Isaac.’
7:17 Therefore, thusthis saysis what the Lord, says: ‘Your wife will become a harlotprostitute in the city, your sons and your daughters will fall by the sword, your land will be parceled up by a measuring line, and you yourself will die upon unclean soil. Moreover,Furthermore Israel will certainly go from its land into exile.’ ”
8:1 ThusThis is what the Lord God showed me, and behold, there was a basket of summer fruit.
8:2 And He said, “What do you see, Amos?” And I said, “A basket of summer fruit.” Then the Lord said to me, “The end has come for My people Israel. I will not spare them noany longer.
8:3 The songs of the palace will turn to wailing inon that day,” declares the Lord God. “ManyThe corpses will be the corpsesmany; in every place they will castthrow them forthout. inHush!” silence.”
8:4 Hear this, you who trample the needy, to doput awayan withend to the humble of the land,
8:5 saying, “When will the new moon be over, So that we may sell grain,; And the sabbathSabbath, so that we may open the wheat market, To make the bushelephah smaller and the shekel bigger, And to cheat with dishonest scales,
8:6 So as to buy the helpless for money, And the needy for a pair of sandals, And that we may sell the refuse of the wheat?”
8:8 Because of this will not the land not quake, And everyone who dwellslives in it mourn? Indeed, all of it will rise up like the Nile, And it will be tossed about And subside like the Nile of Egypt.
8:9 ItAnd it will come about inon that day,” declares the Lord God, “That I will make the sun go down at noon, And make the earth dark in broad daylight.
8:10 Then I will turn your festivals into mourning, And all your songs into lamentationsongs of mourning; And I will bringput sackcloth onaround everyone’s loinswaist, And baldness on every head. And I will make it like a time of mourning for an only son, And the end of it will be like a bitter day.
8:11 “Behold, days are coming,” declares the Lord God, “When I will send a famine on the land, Not a famine forof bread or a thirst for water, But rather for hearing the words of the Lord.
8:12 People will stagger from sea to sea And from the north even to the east; They will goroam toabout and fro to seek the word of the Lord, But they will not find it.
8:13 InOn that day the beautiful virgins And the young men will faint from thirst.
8:14 As for those who swear by the guilt of Samaria, WhoAnd say, ‘As your god lives, O Dan,’ And, ‘As the way of Beersheba lives,’ They will fall and not rise again.”
9:1 I saw the Lord standing beside the altar, and He said, “SmiteStrike the pillar capitals so that the thresholds will shake, And break them on the heads of them all! Then I will slayput to death the rest of them with the sword; They will not have a fugitive who will flee, OrNor a refugeesurvivor who will escape.
9:2 Though they dig into Sheol, From there will My hand will take them; And though they ascend to heaven, From there I will I bring them down.
9:3 ThoughAnd though they hide on the summit of Carmel, I will searchtrack them outdown and take them from there; And though they concealhide themselves from My sight on the floorbottom of the sea, From there I will command the serpent from there, and it will bite them.
9:4 And though they go into captivity before their enemies, From there I will command the sword thatand it slaywill kill them, And I will set My eyes against them for evilharm and not for good.”
9:5 The Lord God of hostsarmies, The One who touches the land so that it meltsquakes, And all those who dwelllive in it mourn, And all of it rises up like the Nile And subsides like the Nile of Egypt;
9:7 “Are you not as the sons of Ethiopia to Me, OYou sons of Israel?” declares the Lord. “Have I not brought up Israel from the land of Egypt, And the Philistines from Caphtor and the Arameans from Kir?
9:8 Behold, the eyes of the Lord God are on the sinful kingdom, And I will destroyeliminate it from the face of the earth; Nevertheless, I will not totally destroyeliminate the house of Jacob,” Declares the Lord.
9:9 “For behold, I am commanding, And I will shake the house of Israel among all nations As grain is shaken in a sieve, But not a kernelpebble will fall to the ground.
9:10 All the sinners of My people will die by the sword, Those who say, ‘The calamitycatastrophe will not overtake or confront us.’
9:11 InOn that day I will raise up the fallen boothshelter of David, And wall up its breachesgaps; I will also raise up its ruins And rebuild it as in the days of old;
9:12 ThatSo that they may possess the remnant of Edom And all the nations who are called by My name,” Declares the Lord who does this.
9:13 “Behold, days are coming,” declares the Lord, “When the plowman will overtake the reaper, And the treaderone ofwho treads grapes will overtake him who sows the seed; When the mountains will drip sweetgrape winejuice, And all the hills will become dissolvedapart.
9:14 Also I will also restore the captivityfortunes of My people Israel, And they will rebuild the ruineddesolated cities and live in them; They will also plant vineyards and drink their wine, And make gardens and eat their fruit.
9:15 I will also plant them on their land, And they will not again be rooteduprooted outagain from their land Which I have given them,” Says the Lord your God.
