Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord needs them, ’ and he will send them at once. ” This took placetSee ch. 1:22 to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet, saying,

‘Behold, your king is coming to you,

The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them. They brought the donkey and the colt and put on them their cloaks, and he sat on them. Most of the crowdw2 Kgs. 9:13 spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. Jesus Curses the Fig Tree

18 rFor ver. 18-22, see Mark 11:12-14, 20-24 In the morning, as he was returning to the city,sch. 4:2 he became hungry. 19 t[Luke 13:6-9] And seeing a fig tree by the wayside, he went to it and found nothing on it but only leaves. And he said to it, “May no fruit ever come from you again! ” And the fig tree withered at once.

20 When the disciples saw it, they marveled, saying, “How did the fig tree wither at once? ” 21 And Jesus answered them, uch. 17:20 “Truly, I say to you,v[John 14:12] if you have faith andwActs 10:20; Rom. 4:20; 14:23; James 1:6 do not doubt, you will not only do what has been done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain,x[Ps. 46:2; 1 Cor. 13:2; Rev. 8:8] ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea, ’ it will happen. 22 Andv[See ver. 21 above] whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive,ySee ch. 7:7 if you have faith. ”

The Authority of Jesus Challenged

23 zFor ver. 23-27, see Mark 11:27-33; Luke 20:1-8 And when he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came up to himaSee ch. 26:55 as he was teaching, and said,b[Ex. 2:14; John 1:25; Acts 4:7] “By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority? ” 24 Jesus answered them, “I also will ask you one question, and if you tell me the answer, then I also will tell you by what authority I do these things. 25 The baptism of John,c[ch. 13:54] from where did it come?dLuke 15:18, 21; John 3:27 From heaven or from man? ” And they discussed it among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven, ’ he will say to us,ever. 32; Luke 7:30 ‘Why then did you not believe him? ’ 26 But if we say, ‘From man, ’fver. 46; ch. 14:5 we are afraid of the crowd, for they all hold that John wasg[John 5:35]; See ch. 11:9 a prophet. ” 27 So they answered Jesus, “We do not know. ” And he said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.

The Parable of the Two Sons

28 hch. 17:25; 18:12 What do you think? A man had two sons. And he went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work iniver. 33; ch. 20:1 the vineyard today. ’ 29 And he answered, ‘I will not, ’ but afterward hejver. 32; ch. 27:3; Heb. 7:21 changed his mind and went. 30 And he went to the other son and said the same. And he answered, ‘I go, sir, ’ but did not go. 31 Which of the two did the will of his father? ” They said, “The first. ” Jesus said to them, “Truly, I say to you,kLuke 7:29 the tax collectors andlLuke 7:37-50 the prostitutes go intomSee ch. 12:28 the kingdom of God before you. 32 For John came to youn[ch. 3:8-12, 15; Prov. 8:20; 2 Pet. 2:21] in the way of righteousness, andover. 25; ch. 11:18 you did not believe him, butpLuke 3:12, 13 the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him. And even when you saw it, you did not afterwardj[See ver. 29 above] change your minds and believe him.

The Parable of the Tenants

33 qFor ver. 33-46, see Mark 12:1-12; Luke 20:9-19 Hear another parable. There was a master of a house who plantedrver. 28; Ps. 80:8; Isa. 5:1 a vineyardsIsa. 5:2 and put a fence around it and dug a winepress in it and built a tower andtSong 8:11, 12 leased it to tenants, anduch. 25:14, 15; [Mark 13:34] went into another country. 34 When the season for fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the tenantst[See ver. 33 above] to get his fruit. 35 vch. 5:12; 22:6; 23:34, 37; [2 Chr. 24:19; 36:15, 16; Neh. 9:26; Jer. 37:15; 38:6; Acts 7:52; 2 Cor. 11:24-26; 1 Thess. 2:15; Heb. 11:36, 37] And the tenants took his servants and beat one, killed another, andw[2 Chr. 24:21; John 10:31-33; Acts 7:59] stoned another. 36 xch. 22:4 Again he sent other servants, more than the first. And they did the same to them. 37 Finally he sent his son to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son. ’ 38 But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves,yHeb. 1:2; [John 1:11; Rom. 8:17] ‘This is the heir. Come,z[1 Kgs. 21:19] let us kill him and have his inheritance. ’ 39 And they took him andaHeb. 13:12 threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. 40 b[ch. 24:50; 25:19] When therefore the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants? ” 41 They said to him,cLuke 19:27 “He will put those wretches to a miserable death anddver. 43; Acts 13:46; 18:6; 28:28; [ch. 8:11, 12] let out the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the fruits in their seasons. ”

42 Jesus said to them, ever. 16 “Have you never read in the Scriptures:
fActs 4:11; 1 Pet. 2:7; Cited from Ps. 118:22, 23 ‘The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone;
this was the Lord's doing,
and it is marvelous in our eyes ’
?

43 Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of Godg[Luke 14:24] will be taken away from you and given to a peopleh[ch. 3:10; Isa. 5:4, 7] producing its fruits. 44 AndiIsa. 8:14, 15; Rom. 9:32, 33; 1 Pet. 2:8 the one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; andjDan. 2:34, 35, 44, 45 when it falls on anyone, it will crush him. ”

45 When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they perceived that he was speaking about them. 46 AndlMark 11:18; Luke 19:47, 48; John 7:25, 30, 44; [ch. 26:4] although they were seeking to arrest him,mver. 26 they feared the crowds, because they held him to ben[ver. 11] a prophet.
