The Temptation of Jesus

Jesus Begins His Ministry

And they said,k[Matt. 13:55; John 6:42] “Is not thislch. 3:23 Joseph's son? ” 23 And he said to them, “Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb,m[ch. 23:39; Matt. 27:42] ‘Physician, heal yourself. ’ What we have heard you didnMatt. 11:23; Mark 2:1-12; John 4:46-53 at Capernaum, do here in your hometown as well. ” 24 And he said, “Truly, I say to you,oSee Matt. 13:57 no prophet is acceptable in his hometown. 25 But in truth, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, whenp1 Kgs. 17:1; 18:1; James 5:17; [Rev. 11:6] the heavens were shut up three years and six months, and a great famine came over all the land, 26 and Elijah was sent to none of themq1 Kgs. 17:9 but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. 27 Andr[2 Kgs. 7:3] there were many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed,s2 Kgs. 5:1-14 but only Naaman the Syrian. ” 28 When they heard these things, all in the synagogue were filled with wrath. 29 And they rose up andt[Num. 15:35; Acts 7:58] drove him out of the town and brought him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they could throw him down the cliff. 30 ButuJohn 8:59; 10:39 passing through their midst, he went away.

Jesus Heals a Man with an Unclean Demon

Have you come to destroy us?b[Acts 19:15; James 2:19] I know who you are—cJohn 6:69; Acts 3:14; Rev. 3:7; [ch. 1:35; Heb. 7:26; 1 John 2:20] the Holy One of God. ” 35 But Jesusdver. 41; See Matt. 12:16 rebuked him, saying, “Be silent and come out of him! ” And when the demon had thrown him down in their midst, he came out of him, having done him no harm. 36 Andever. 32; [Matt. 8:27] they were all amazed and said to one another, “What is this word?ever. 32; [Matt. 8:27] For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out! ” 37 Andfver. 14 reports about him went out into every place in the surrounding region.

Jesus Heals Many

Nowh1 Cor. 9:5 Simon's mother-in-law was ill with a high fever, and they appealed to him on her behalf. 39 And he stood over her andich. 8:24; 9:42; Matt. 8:26; 17:18; Mark 4:39; 9:25 rebuked the fever, and it left her, and immediately she rose and began to serve them.

40 Now when the sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick with various diseases brought them to him, andjSee Mark 5:23 he laid his hands on every one of them and healed them. 41 kMark 3:11, 12; [Acts 16:17, 18] And demons also came out of many,lver. 33 crying, “You aremSee Matt. 14:33 the Son of God! ” But he rebuked them andkMark 3:11, 12; [Acts 16:17, 18] would not allow them to speak, because they knew that he wasnSee Matt. 1:17 the Christ.

Jesus Preaches in Synagogues
