6 When Pilate heard this, he asked whether the man was a Galilean. 7 And when he learned that he belonged tomSee ch. 3:1 Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him over to Herod, who was himself in Jerusalem at that time. 8 When Herod saw Jesus, he was very glad,nch. 9:9 for he had long desired to see him,oMatt. 14:1; Mark 6:14 because he had heard about him, and he was hopingpSee Matt. 12:38 to see some sign done by him. 9 So he questioned him at some length, but he made no answer. 10 The chief priests and the scribes stood by, vehemently accusing him. 11 And Herod with his soldiersqMark 9:12; Acts 4:11 treated him with contempt andrch. 18:32 mocked him. Then,s[Matt. 27:28; Mark 15:17] arraying him in splendid clothing, he sent him back to Pilate. 12 AndtActs 4:27; [Ps. 2:2] Herod and Pilate became friends with each other that very day, for before this they had been at enmity with each other.
13 Pilate then called together the chief priests anduSee ch. 24:20 the rulers and the people, 14 and said to them, “You brought me this manvver. 2 as one who was misleading the people. AndwActs 3:13 after examining him before you, behold, Ixver. 4 did not find this man guilty of any of your charges against him. 15 Neither did Herod, foryver. 11 he sent him back to us. And their voices prevailed. 24 So Pilate decided that their demand should be granted. 25 He released the man who had been thrown into prisongver. 19 for insurrection and murder, for whom they asked,hJohn 19:16 but he delivered Jesus over to their will.
