20

hFor ver. 1-8, see Matt. 21:23-27; Mark 11:27-33 One day, ich. 19:47 as Jesus was teaching the people in the temple and preaching the gospel,jActs 4:1; 6:12 the chief priests and the scribes with the elders came up and said to him, “Tell usk[Ex. 2:14; John 1:25; Acts 4:7] by what authority you do these things, or who it is that gave you this authority. ” He answered them, “I also will ask you a question. Now tell me, Was the baptism of Johnlch. 15:18, 21; John 3:27 from heaven or from man? ” And they discussed it with one another, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven, ’ he will say, mch. 7:30; Matt. 21:32 ‘Why did you not believe him? ’ But if we say, ‘From man, ’ all the people will stone us to death, for they are convinced that John wasn[John 5:35]; See Matt. 11:9 a prophet. ” So they answered that they did not know where it came from. And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things. ”

Paying Taxes to Caesar

19 hch. 19:47, 48 The scribes and the chief priests sought to lay hands on him at that very hour, for they perceived that he had told this parable against them, but they feared the people. 20 iFor ver. 20-38, see Matt. 22:15-32; Mark 12:13-27 So theyjch. 14:1; Mark 3:2 watched him and sent spies, whok[1 Kgs. 14:6] pretended to be sincere, that they mightlver. 26; ch. 11:54 catch him in something he said, so as to deliver him up to the authority and jurisdiction ofmMatt. 27:2, 11; 28:14; See Acts 23:24 the governor. 21 So they asked him, “Teacher, we know that you speak and teach rightly, andoSee Acts 10:34 show no partiality, but truly teachpActs 18:25, 26; [Acts 13:10] the way of God. 22 Is it lawful for us to giveqMatt. 17:25 tribute torch. 2:1; 3:1 Caesar, or not? ” 23 But he perceived theirs1 Cor. 3:19; 2 Cor. 4:2; 11:3; Eph. 4:14; [2 Cor. 12:16] craftiness, and said to them, 24 “Show metSee Matt. 18:28 a denarius. Sadducees Ask About the Resurrection

27 There came to himwMatt. 3:7; 16:1; 22:34; Acts 4:1; 5:17; 23:6 some Sadducees,xActs 23:8; [Acts 4:2] those who deny that there is a resurrection, 28 and they asked him a question, saying, “Teacher, Moses wrote for usy[Deut. 25:5] that if a man's brother dies, having a wife but no children, the man must take the widow and raise up offspring for his brother. 29 Now there were seven brothers. The first took a wife, and died without children. 30 And the second 31 and the third took her, and likewise all seven left no children and died. 32 Afterward the woman also died. 33 In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife will the woman be? For the seven had her as wife. ”

34 And Jesus said to them, zch. 16:8; See ch. 10:6 “The sons of this ageach. 17:27; Matt. 24:38; [ver. 35] marry andach. 17:27; Matt. 24:38; [ver. 35] are given in marriage, 35 but those who arebActs 5:41; 2 Thess. 1:5, 11; See Matt. 22:8 considered worthy to attain toc[ch. 18:30]; See Mark 10:30 that age and to the resurrection from the deadd[ver. 34] neither marryd[ver. 34] nor are given in marriage, 36 fore1 Cor. 15:54, 55; Rev. 21:4 they cannot die anymore, because they aref[Heb. 2:7, 9] equal to angels andg[Gen. 1:26; Ps. 82:6] areh[Rom. 8:19, 23; 1 Cor. 15:52] sons of God, beingiSee ch. 10:6 sons of the resurrection. 37 But that the dead are raised, jver. 28 even Moses showed, inkEx. 3:1–4:17 the passage about the bush, where he callslActs 7:32; Cited from Ex. 3:15; [Ex. 3:6] the Lord the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. 38 Now he is not God of the dead, but of the living, for allmRom. 6:11; 14:7, 8; 2 Cor. 5:15; Gal. 2:19; 1 Thess. 5:10; 1 Pet. 4:2; [Heb. 9:14] live to him. ” 39 Then some of the scribesnMark 12:28; [Matt. 22:34] answered, “Teacher, you have spoken well. ” 40 ForoMatt. 22:46; Mark 12:34 they no longer dared to ask him any question.
