The Birth of Jesus Christ

This was the firstn[See ver. 1 above] registration when1Or This was the registration before Quiriniusoch. 3:1 was governor of Syria. And all went to be registered, each to his own town. And Joseph also went uppch. 1:26 from Galilee, from the town ofqSee Matt. 2:23 Nazareth, to Judea, torver. 11; John 7:42; [1 Sam. 16:1] the city of David, which is calledsMatt. 2:1 Bethlehem,tch. 1:27 because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. Andt[See ver. 4 above] while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. And she gave birth to her firstborn son anduver. 12 wrapped him in swaddling cloths andvver. 16 laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them inwch. 22:11 (Gk.) the inn.

The Shepherds and the Angels

And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lordxch. 24:4; Acts 12:7 appeared to them, andych. 9:31; Acts 7:55; 2 Cor. 3:18 the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with fear. 10 And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy that will be for allzver. 32; John 11:50; [Zech. 9:9] the people. 11 ForaIsa. 9:6 unto you is born this day inbver. 4 the city of DavidcMatt. 1:21; John 4:42 a Savior, who isdActs 2:36; 10:36; [ch. 23:2]; See Matt. 1:17 Christe[ch. 1:43] the Lord. 12 Andf1 Sam. 2:34; 2 Kgs. 19:29; 20:8, 9; Isa. 7:11, 14 this will be a sign for you: you will find a babygver. 7 wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger. ” 13 And suddenly there was with the angelhGen. 28:12; 32:1, 2; 1 Kgs. 22:19; 2 Chr. 18:18; Ps. 103:21; 148:2; Dan. 7:10; Rev. 5:11 a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,

15 When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us. ” 16 And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the babymver. 7, 12 lying in a manger. 17 And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child. 18 And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. 19 Butnver. 51; [ch. 1:66; Gen. 37:11] Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart. 20 And the shepherds returned,oSee ch. 7:16 glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.

Jesus Presented at the Temple

33 Andmver. 27 his father and his mother marveled at what was said about him. 34 And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “Behold, this child is appointedn[Isa. 8:14; Matt. 21:44; John 9:39; 1 Cor. 1:23, 24; 2 Cor. 2:16; 1 Pet. 2:8, 9] for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a signoActs 28:22 that is opposed 35 (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also), so that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed. ”

36 And there waspSee Ex. 15:20 a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years, having lived with her husband seven years from when she was a virgin, 37 and then as a widow until she was eighty-four.1Or as a widow for eighty-four years She did not depart from the temple,q1 Tim. 5:5 worshiping withrch. 5:33; Matt. 6:16-18; Acts 13:2; 14:23; 2 Cor. 6:5; 11:27 fasting and prayer night and day. 38 And coming up at that very hour she began to give thanks to God and to speak of him to all who weresver. 25; See ch. 1:68 waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem.

The Return to Nazareth

39 And when they had performed everything according totver. 23 the Law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own town ofuver. 4 Nazareth. 40 vch. 1:80 And the child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom. And the favor of God was upon him.

The Boy Jesus in the Temple

41 Nowwver. 27 his parents wentx[1 Sam. 1:3] to Jerusalem every year atyEx. 23:15; Deut. 16:1; John 2:13 the Feast of the Passover. 42 And when he was twelve years old,zJohn 11:55 they went up according to custom. 43 And when the feastaEx. 12:15; Lev. 23:8; Deut. 16:3 was ended, as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem.w[See ver. 41 above] His parents did not know it, 44 but supposing him to be in the group they went a day's journey, but then they began to search for him among their relatives and acquaintances, 45 and when they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem, searching for him. 46 After three days they found him in the temple,bSee Matt. 26:55 sitting amongcch. 5:17 the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. 47 And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. 48 And when his parents saw him, they were astonished. And his mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us so? Behold,dver. 27; [ver. 49] your father and I have been searching for you in great distress. ” 49 And he said to them, “Why were you looking for me? Did you not know thateSee ch. 13:33 I must be infJohn 2:16; 14:2 my Father's house? ”1Or about my Father's business 50 Andg[ch. 18:34]; See Mark 9:32 they did not understand the saying that he spoke to them. 51 And he went down with them and came to Nazareth and was submissive to them.
