kJer. 20:18 I am the man who has seen affliction
under thelPs. 2:9 rod of his wrath;

he has driven and brought me
mIsa. 5:30 into darkness without any light;

surely against me he turns his hand
again and again the whole day long.

He has made my flesh and my skin waste away;
nPs. 51:8; Isa. 38:13; Jer. 50:17 he has broken my bones;

o[Job 19:12] he has besieged and enveloped me
withpver. 19; Deut. 29:18 bitterness and tribulation;

qPs. 143:3 he has made me dwell in darkness
like the dead of long ago.

rJob 19:8 He has walled me about so thatsPs. 88:8 I cannot escape;
he has made my chains heavy;

thoughtJob 19:7; 30:20; Ps. 22:2 I call and cry for help,
he shuts out my prayer;

r[See ver. 7 above] he has blocked my ways with blocks of stones;
he has made my paths crooked.

10 uSee Hos. 13:8 He is a bear lying in wait for me,
a lion in hiding;

11 v[Jer. 18:15] he turned aside my steps andu[See ver. 10 above] tore me to pieces;
wch. 1:13 he has made me desolate;

12 xch. 2:4 he bent his bowy[Job 16:12] and set me
as a target for his arrow.

13 He drove into my kidneys
zJob 6:4; Ps. 38:2 the arrows of his quiver;

14 aSee Jer. 20:7 I have become the laughingstock of all peoples,
bver. 63; Job 30:9; Ps. 69:12 the object of their taunts all day long.

15 c[Isa. 51:17, 21] He has filled me with bitterness;
he has sated me withdJer. 9:15 wormwood.

16 e[Prov. 20:17] He has made my teeth grind on gravel,
andfSee Jer. 6:26 made me cower in ashes;

17 my soul is bereft of peace;
I have forgotten what happiness is;

18 g[Ps. 9:18] so I say, “My endurance has perished;
so has my hope from the Lord. ”

19 h[ch. 1:9, 11, 20] Remember my affliction and my wanderings,
d[See ver. 15 above] the wormwood andiver. 5 the gall!

20 My soul continually remembers it
jPs. 42:6; 44:25 and is bowed down within me.

21 But this I call to mind,
andk[Ps. 42:5, 11] therefore I have hope:

22 l[Mal. 3:6] The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases;
l[Mal. 3:6] his mercies never come to an end;

23 they are newmJob 7:18 every morning;
nPs. 36:5 great is your faithfulness.

24 oPs. 16:5; 73:26 “The Lord is my portion, ” says my soul,
k[See ver. 21 above] “therefore I will hope in him. ”
25 The Lord is good to those whopPs. 130:6; [Isa. 30:18] wait for him,
to the soul who seeks him.

26 qPs. 130:5, 7; Mic. 7:7 It is good that one should wait quietly
for the salvation of the Lord.

27 r[Matt. 11:29] It is good for a man that he bear
the yokes[Eccles. 12:1] in his youth.

28 Let himtch. 1:1; 2:10; Isa. 3:26 sit alone in silence
when it is laid on him;

29 uJob 42:6 let him put his mouth in the dust—
there may yet be hope;

30 vIsa. 50:6; Matt. 5:39 let him give his cheek to the one who strikes,
and let him be filled with insults.

31 wPs. 103:9 For the Lord will not
cast off forever,

32 but, though hexch. 1:5 cause grief,yPs. 103:8 he will have compassion
zPs. 106:45 according to the abundance of his steadfast love;

33 a[Heb. 12:6, 10] for he does not willingly afflict
orb[Heb. 12:11] grieve the children of men.

34 To crush underfoot
allc[Ps. 107:10] the prisoners of the earth,

35 d[Hab. 1:13] to deny a man justice
in the presence of the Most High,

36 to subvert a man in his lawsuit,
d[See ver. 35 above] the Lord does not approve.
