Pilate said to them,u[ver. 14] “Behold the man! ” 6 When the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, “Crucify him, crucify him! ” Pilate said to them,v[ch. 18:31] “Take him yourselves and crucify him, forwver. 4 I find no guilt in him. ” 7 The Jews answered him, “We have a law, andxLev. 24:16; [ch. 10:33] according to that law he ought to die becauseych. 5:17, 18; 10:36; Matt. 26:63; Luke 22:70 he has made himself the Son of God. ” 8 When Pilate heard this statement,z[Matt. 27:19] he was even more afraid. 9 ach. 18:33 He entered his headquarters again and said to Jesus, bch. 7:27 “Where are you from? ” Butc[ch. 18:37]; See Matt. 26:63 Jesus gave him no answer. 10 So Pilate said to him, “You will not speak to me? Do you not know that I have authority to release you and authority to crucify you? ” 11 Jesus answered him, d[Rom. 13:1] “You would have no authority over me at all unless it had been given you from above. Thereforee[ch. 18:14, 28-32; Matt. 27:2] he who delivered me over to youfSee ch. 9:41 has the greater sin. ”
12 From then ongActs 3:13 Pilate sought to release him, but the Jews cried out, “If you release this man, you are not Caesar's friend.hSee Luke 23:2 Everyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar. ” 13 So when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat down oniMatt. 27:19 the judgment seat at a place called The Stone Pavement, and in Aramaic1Or Hebrew; also verses 17, 20 Gabbatha. 14 Now it wasj[ch. 18:28]; See Matt. 27:62 the day of Preparation of the Passover. It was about the sixth hour. He said to the Jews,k[ver. 5] “Behold your King! ” 15 They cried out,lLuke 23:18; [Acts 21:36] “Away with him, away with him, crucify him! ” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King? ” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar. ”
16 mMatt. 27:26; Mark 15:15; Luke 23:25 So hench. 18:36-40 delivered him over to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus, 17 andoMatt. 27:33; Mark 15:22; Luke 23:33 he went out,pLuke 14:27; [Matt. 27:32; Mark 15:21; Luke 23:26] bearing his own cross, to the place called the place of a skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha. 18 qMatt. 27:38; Mark 15:24, 27; Luke 23:32, 33 There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them. 19 Pilater[Matt. 27:37; Mark 15:26; Luke 23:38] also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews. ” 20 Many of the Jews read this inscription, forsver. 17; [Num. 15:35, 36; Heb. 13:12] the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Aramaic, in Latin, and in Greek. 21 So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews, ’ but rather, ‘This man said, I am King of the Jews. ’ ” 22 Pilate answered,t[Gen. 43:14; Esth. 4:16] “What I have written I have written. ”
23 uMatt. 27:35; Mark 15:24; Luke 23:34 When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his garments and divided them into four parts, one part for each soldier; also his tunic. But the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom,
24 so they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be. ”vSee ch. 13:18 This was to fulfill the Scripture which says,
wCited from Ps. 22:18 “They divided my garments among them,
and for my clothing they cast lots. ” So the soldiers did these things,

27 Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother! ” And from that hour the disciple took her toa[ch. 16:32] his own home.
28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all was nowb[ver. 30] finished, said (v[See ver. 24 above] to fulfill the Scripture), cPs. 69:21; See ch. 4:6, 7 “I thirst. ” 29 A jar full of sour wine stood there,dMatt. 27:48; Mark 15:36; [Luke 23:36] so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. 30 When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, e[ver. 28; Acts 13:29]; See ch. 17:4 “It is finished, ” and he bowed his head andfMatt. 27:50; Mark 15:37; Luke 23:46 gave up his spirit.

38 sFor ver. 38-42, see Matt. 27:57-61; Mark 15:42-47; Luke 23:50-56 After these things Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretlytSee ch. 7:13 for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him permission.
