Sin and Treachery

You shall say to them, Thus says the Lord :
y[Rom. 11:11] When men fall, do they not rise again?
If one turns away, does he not return?

Why then has this peoplezSee ch. 7:24 turned away
in perpetualaSee ch. 2:19 backsliding?
bch. 9:6 They hold fast to deceit;
they refuse to return.

c[2 Pet. 3:9] I have paid attention and listened,
but they have not spoken rightly;
no man relents of his evil,
saying, ‘What have I done? ’

Everyone turns to his own course,
dSee Job 39:19-25 like a horse plunging headlong into battle.
Even the stork in the heavens
knows her times,
andeSong 2:12 the turtledove,fIsa. 38:14 swallow, and crane
keep the time of their coming,
g[ch. 5:4, 5; Isa. 1:3] but my people know not
the rules of the Lord.

h[Rom. 2:17, 18] How can you say, ‘We are wise,
and the law of the Lord is with us ’
?
But behold, the lying pen of the scribes
has made it into a lie.
i[1 Cor. 1:19, 20] The wise men shall be put to shame;
they shall be dismayedjJob 5:13 and taken;
behold, they have rejected the word of the Lord,
so what wisdom is in them?

10 kFor ver. 10-12, see ch. 6:12-15 Therefore I will give their wives to others
and their fields to conquerors,
because from the least to the greatest
everyonel[Isa. 56:11] is greedy for unjust gain;
from prophet to priest,
everyone deals falsely.

11 They have healedmver. 21 the wound of my people lightly,
saying, ‘Peace, peace, ’

when there is no peace.
12 Were they ashamed when they committed abomination?
No,nSee ch. 3:3 they were not at all ashamed;
they did not know how to blush.
o[Hos. 4:5] Therefore they shall fall among the fallen;
when I punish them, they shall be overthrown,
says the Lord.

13 When I would gather them, declares the Lord,
there areqIsa. 5:1, 2; Joel 1:7 no grapes on the vine,
r[Matt. 21:19; Luke 13:6] nor figs on the fig tree;
sIsa. 1:30 even the leaves are withered,
and what I gave them has passed away from them. ”

14 Why do we sit still?
tch. 4:5 Gather together;tch. 4:5 let us go into the fortified cities
and perish there,
for the Lord our God has doomed us to perish
and hasuch. 9:15; 23:15; Lam. 3:15, 19; Amos 6:12; [Rev. 8:11] given usvch. 23:15; Deut. 29:18 poisoned water to drink,
because we have sinned against the Lord.

15 wch. 14:19; Job 30:26 We looked for peace, but no good came;
for a time of healing, but behold, terror.

16 xJob 39:20 “The snorting of their horses is heardych. 4:15 from Dan;
at the sound of the neighingzJudg. 5:22 of their stallions
ach. 49:21; 51:29; Ps. 60:2 the whole land quakes.
They comebch. 10:25; 47:2 and devour the land and all that fills it,
the city and those who dwell in it.

17 For behold, I am sending among youc[Lev. 26:22] serpents,
addersdPs. 58:4, 5; [Eccles. 10:11] that cannot be charmed,

declares the Lord.

Jeremiah Grieves for His People

18
My joy is gone; grief is upon me;
fIsa. 1:5; Lam. 1:13, 22; 5:17 my heart is sick within me.

19 Behold, the cry of the daughter of my people
fromgIsa. 39:3 the length and breadth of the land:
“Is the Lord not in Zion?
hIsa. 33:17 Is her King not in her? ”

iDeut. 32:21 “Why have they provoked me to anger with their carved images
and with their foreign idols? ”
20 “The harvest is past, the summer is ended,
and we are not saved. ”

21 For the wound ofjver. 11; ch. 14:17 the daughter of my people is my heart wounded;
kJob 30:30; Lam. 4:8; Joel 2:6; Nah. 2:10 I mourn, and dismay has taken hold on me.

22 Is there nolch. 46:11; [Gen. 37:25] balm in Gilead?
Is there no physician there?
Why then has the health of the daughter of my people
not been restored?
