Judgment on Ammon

49

ach. 25:21; [Ezek. 21:28; 25:2] Concerning the Ammonites. Thus says the Lord :
“Has Israel no sons?
Has he no heir?
Why then hasb[1 Kgs. 11:5, 33; 2 Kgs. 23:13] Milcomc[Amos 1:13] dispossessed Gad,
and his people settled in its cities?

Therefore, behold, the days are coming,
declares the Lord,
when I will causedch. 4:19 the battle cry to be heard
againsteEzek. 21:20; 25:5; Amos 1:14 Rabbah of the Ammonites;
it shall become a desolatefch. 30:18 mound,
and its villages shall be burned with fire;
then Israel shall dispossess those who dispossessed him,
says the Lord.

Wail, Ogch. 48:2 Heshbon, for Ai is laid waste!
Cry out, O daughters ofe[See ver. 2 above] Rabbah!
hch. 48:37; See ch. 4:8 put on sackcloth,
lament, and run to and fro among the hedges!
Fori[1 Kgs. 11:5, 33; 2 Kgs. 23:13] Milcom shall go into exile,

Why do you boast of your valleys,
kch. 3:14 O faithless daughter,
lch. 48:7 who trusted in her treasures, saying,
‘Who will come against me? ’

Behold,m[ch. 48:43] I will bring terror upon you,
declares the Lord God of hosts,
from all who are around you,
and you shall be driven out, every man straight before him,
with none to gather the fugitives.

Butn[ver. 39; ch. 48:47] afterward I will restore the fortunes of the Ammonites, declares the Lord. ”

Judgment on Edom

For I will bring the calamity of Esau upon him,

and he is not able to conceal himself.
His children are destroyed, and his brothers,

12 For thus says the Lord :zch. 25:28; [Obad. 16] “If those who did not deserve to drink the cup must drink it,ach. 25:29 will you go unpunished? You shall not go unpunished, but you must drink. 13 bSee ch. 22:5 For I have sworn by myself, declares the Lord, thatcver. 22; See ch. 48:24 Bozrah shall becomedSee ch. 24:9 a horror, a taunt, a waste, and a curse, and all her cities shall be perpetual wastes. ”


14 eSee Obad. 1-4 I have heard a message from the Lord,
and an envoy has been sent among the nations:
f[Isa. 13:4] “Gather yourselves together and come against her,
and rise up for battle!

15 For behold, I will make you small among the nations,
despised among mankind.

16 The horror you inspire has deceived you,
and the pride of your heart,
you who live in the clefts of the rock,1Or of Sela
who hold the height of the hill.
Though youg[ch. 48:28] make your nest as high as the eagle's,
I will bring you down from there,
declares the Lord.

Judgment on Damascus

23 ConcerningzIsa. 17:1; Amos 1:3 Damascus:

for they have heard bad news;
they melt in fear,
cZech. 9:4 they are troubled like the sea that cannot be quiet.

and panic seized her;
anguish and sorrows have taken hold of her,
asy[See ver. 22 above] of a woman in labor.

25 How ise[ch. 33:9] the famous city not forsaken,
the city of my joy?

26 fch. 50:30 Therefore her young men shall fall in her squares,
and all her soldiers shall be destroyed in that day,
declares the Lord of hosts.

27 AndgSee ch. 17:27 I will kindle a fire in the wall ofz[See ver. 23 above] Damascus,
and it shall devour the strongholds ofh1 Kgs. 15:18; 20:1; 2 Kgs. 6:24; 8:7; 13:3 Ben-hadad. ”

Judgment on Kedar and Hazor

28 ConcerningiIsa. 21:16; 60:7 Kedar and the kingdoms of Hazor that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon struck down.
Thus says the Lord :

DestroykIsa. 11:14; Ezek. 25:4, 10; See Judg. 6:3 the people of the east!

29 lPs. 120:5; Song 1:5 Their tents and their flocks shall be taken,

their camels shall be led away from them,
and men shall cry to them:mSee ch. 6:25 ‘Terror on every side! ’

30 nver. 8 Flee, wander far away, dwell in the depths,
O inhabitants of Hazor!
declares the Lord.
For Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon
has made a plan against you
and formed a purpose against you.

31 j[See ver. 28 above] Rise up, advance against a nationoJob 16:12 at ease,
pEzek. 38:8, 11 that dwells securely,
declares the Lord,
pEzek. 38:8, 11 that has no gates or bars,
that dwells alone.

32 q[Ezek. 38:12] Their camels shall become plunder,
their herds of livestock a spoil.
rver. 36 I will scatter to every wind

and I will bring their calamity
from every side of them,
declares the Lord.

33 Hazor shall becometSee ch. 9:11 a haunt of jackals,
an everlasting waste;
uver. 18 no man shall dwell there;
uver. 18 no man shall sojourn in her. ”

Judgment on Elam

34 The word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah the prophet concerningvch. 25:25; Gen. 14:1; Isa. 11:11; 21:2; Ezek. 32:24; Dan. 8:2 Elam, in the beginning of the reign ofw2 Kgs. 24:17, 18 Zedekiah king of Judah.

35 Thus says the Lord of hosts: “Behold, I will breakxIsa. 22:6 the bow ofv[See ver. 34 above] Elam, the mainstay of their might. 36 And I will bring uponv[See ver. 34 above] Elam the four winds from the four quarters of heaven. And I will scatter them to all those winds, and there shall be no nation to which those driven out ofv[See ver. 34 above] Elam shall not come. 37 I willy[ch. 1:17] terrifyv[See ver. 34 above] Elam before their enemies and before those who seek their life. I will bring disaster upon them,zSee ch. 12:13 my fierce anger, declares the Lord.aSee ch. 9:16 I will send the sword after them, until I have consumed them, 38 and I will set my throne inv[See ver. 34 above] Elam and destroy their king and officials, declares the Lord.

39 But in the latter daysb[ch. 48:47] I will restore the fortunes ofv[See ver. 34 above] Elam, declares the Lord. ”
