Then the Lord said to me, “Take a large tabletwch. 30:8 and write on it in common characters, ‘Belonging to Maher-shalal-hashbaz. ’ Andx[ch. 43:10] I will get reliable witnesses,y2 Kgs. 16:10, 11, 15, 16 Uriah the priest and Zechariah the son of Jeberechiah, to attest for me. ”

And I went to the prophetess, and she conceived and bore a son. Then the Lord said to me,z[Hos. 1:4] “Call his name Maher-shalal-hashbaz; a[ch. 7:16] for before the boy knows how to cry ‘My father ’ or ‘My mother, ’ thea[ch. 7:16] wealth ofbSee ch. 7:8, 9 Damascus and the spoil ofbSee ch. 7:8, 9 Samaria will be carried away before the king of Assyria. ”

The Lord spoke to me again: “Because this people have refused the waters ofc[Neh. 3:15; John 9:7, 11] Shiloah that flow gently, and rejoice overdSee ch. 7:1, 4 Rezin and the son of Remaliah, therefore, behold, the Lord is bringing up against theme[ch. 17:12, 13] the waters offSee ch. 7:20 the River, mighty and many, the king of Assyria and all his glory. And itg[Jer. 46:8] will rise over all its channels and go over all its banks, and it will sweep on into Judah, it will overflow and pass on,hch. 30:28 reaching even to the neck, and itsi[ch. 36:1] outspread wings will fill the breadth of your land,jch. 7:14 O Immanuel. ”

give ear, all you far countries;
strap on your armor and be shattered;

10 Take counsel together, but it will come to nothing;
speak a word,lch. 7:7 but it will not stand,
for Godm[ver. 8; Rom. 8:31] is with us.

Fear God, Wait for the Lord

11 For the Lord spoke thus to me with his strong hand upon me, andn[Ezek. 2:8] warned me not to walk in the way of this people, saying: 12 “Do not callo[ch. 7:2] conspiracy all that this people calls conspiracy, andpCited 1 Pet. 3:14, 15 do not fear what they fear, nor be in dread. 13 But the Lord of hosts,qSee Num. 20:12 him you shall regard as holy. Let him be your fear, and let him be your dread. 14 And he will become arEzek. 11:16 sanctuary andsCited Rom. 9:33; 1 Pet. 2:8; [ch. 28:16] a stone of offense and a rock of stumbling to both houses of Israel, a trap and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem. 15 And manyt[ch. 28:13; Matt. 21:44; Luke 20:18] shall stumble on it. They shall fall and be broken; they shall be snared and taken. ”

Should they inquire ofb[Ps. 106:28]; See 1 Sam. 28:11-14 the dead on behalf of the living? 20 c[Luke 16:29] To the teaching and to the testimony! If they will not speak according to this word, it is because they have nod[ch. 60:1] dawn. 21 They will pass through the land, greatly distressed and hungry. And when they are hungry, they will be enraged and will speak contemptuously against2Or speak contemptuously by their king and their God, and turn their faces upward. 22 ech. 5:30 And they will look to the earth, but behold, distress and darkness, the gloom of anguish.
