1
Rejoice not, O Israel!
Exult not like the peoples;
ech. 1:2 for you have played the whore, forsaking your God.
fch. 2:5; Jer. 44:17 You have loved a prostitute's wages
on all threshing floors.
2 g[ch. 2:9] Threshing floor and wine vat shall not feed them,
andg[ch. 2:9] the new wine shall fail them.
3 They shall not remain inhJer. 2:7; 16:18; See Lev. 25:23 the land of the Lord,
butiSee ch. 8:13 Ephraim shall return to Egypt,
andjEzek. 4:13; Dan. 1:8 they shall eat unclean food in Assyria.
4 k[ch. 3:4] They shall not pour drink offerings of wine to the Lord,
l[ch. 8:13] and their sacrifices shall not please him.
It shall be likemDeut. 26:14; Ezek. 24:17 mourners' bread to them;
all who eat of it shall be defiled;
for their bread shall be for their hunger only;
n[Hag. 2:13] it shall not come to the house of the Lord.
5 o[Isa. 10:3] What will you do on the day of the appointed festival,
and on the day of the feast of the Lord?
6 For behold, they are going away from destruction;
butpSee ch. 8:13 Egypt shall gather them;
Memphis shall bury them.
Nettles shall possessq[ch. 10:8; Isa. 2:20] their precious things of silver;
r[ch. 10:8] thorns shall be in their tents.
7 sSee Isa. 10:3 The days of punishment have come;
the days of recompense have come;
Israel shall know it.
tEzek. 13:3 The prophet is a fool;
the man of the spirit is mad,
because of your great iniquity
and great hatred.
8 The prophet isuEzek. 3:17 the watchman of Ephraim with my God;
yetvPs. 91:3; [ch. 5:1] a fowler's snare is on all his ways,
and hatred in the house of his God.
9 w[ch. 5:2] They have deeply corrupted themselves
asxch. 10:9; Judg. 19:22 in the days of Gibeah:
w[ch. 5:2] he will remember their iniquity;
he will punish their sins.
10 Like grapes in the wilderness,
y[Ps. 80:8; Isa. 5:1] I found Israel.
Like the first fruit on the fig tree
in its first season,
I saw your fathers.
ButzNum. 25:3; Ps. 106:28 they came to Baal-peor
anda[ch. 4:14] consecrated themselves to the thing of shame,
andb[Rom. 1:28, 29] became detestable like the thing they loved.
11 Ephraim'scch. 10:5; [ch. 4:7] glory shall fly away like a bird—
d[Isa. 26:18] no birth, no pregnancy, no conception!
12 ech. 13:16 Even if they bring up children,
I will bereave them till none is left.
fch. 7:13 Woe to them
whengch. 5:6; 1 Sam. 28:15, 16; Ezek. 10:18 I depart from them!
13 Ephraim,h[Ezek. 27:3] as I have seen, was like a young palm1Or like Tyre planted in a meadow;
bute[See ver. 12 above] Ephraim must lead his children out to slaughter.
14 Give them, O Lord —
what will you give?
Give themi[Luke 23:29] a miscarrying womb
and dry breasts.
15 Every evil of theirs is injch. 4:15; 12:11 Gilgal;
there I began to hate them.
Because of the wickedness of their deeds
I will drive them out of my house.
I will love them no more;
allkch. 8:4 their princes arel[ch. 5:2] rebels.
16 Ephraim is stricken;
m[ver. 11] their root is dried up;
they shall bear no fruit.
Evenn[ver. 12, 13] though they give birth,
e[See ver. 12 above] I will put their beloved children to death.
17 o[ch. 8:5] My God will reject them
because they have not listened to him;
pDeut. 28:64, 65 they shall be wanderers among the nations.
