Jacob Sent to Laban

Then Isaac called Jacobgver. 6 and blessed him and directed him,f[See ch. 27:46 above] “You must not take a wife from the Canaanite women. hHos. 12:12 Arise, go to Paddan-aram to the house ofich. 22:23 Bethuel your mother's father, and take as your wife from there one of the daughters of Laban your mother's brother. jSee ch. 17:1 God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and multiply you, that you may become a company of peoples. May he givekSee ch. 12:2, 3 the blessing of Abraham to you and to your offspring with you, that you may take possession oflch. 17:8; 36:7; 37:1 the land of your sojournings that God gave to Abraham! ” Thus Isaac sent Jacob away. And he went to Paddan-aram, to Laban, the son of Bethuel the Aramean, the brother of Rebekah, Jacob's and Esau's mother.

Esau Marries an Ishmaelite

Now Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob and sent him away to Paddan-aram to take a wife from there, and that as he blessed him he directed him, “You must not take a wife from the Canaanite women, ” and that Jacob had obeyed his father and his mother and gone to Paddan-aram. So when Esau sawmch. 24:3; 26:35 that the Canaanite women did not please Isaac his father, Esau went to Ishmael and took as his wife, besides the wives he had,n[ch. 36:3] Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael, Abraham's son, the sister ofoch. 25:13; 36:3 Nebaioth.

Jacob's Dream

Taking one of the stones of the place, he put it under his head and lay down in that place to sleep. 12 And her[Num. 12:6; Job 33:15, 16] dreamed, and behold, there was a ladder1Or a flight of steps set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven. And behold,s[John 1:51] the angels of God were ascending and descending on it! 13 And behold,t[ch. 35:1; 48:3] the Lord stood above it1Or beside him and said,uch. 26:24 “I am the Lord, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac.vch. 35:12; See ch. 13:14-16 The land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring. 14 Your offspring shall be likewSee ch. 13:16 the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south, and in you andxSee ch. 12:3 your offspring shall all the families of the earth be blessed. 15 Behold,ych. 26:24; 31:3 I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, andzch. 35:6 will bring you back to this land. For I willa1 Kgs. 8:57 not leave you until I have done what I have promised you. ” 16 Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, “Surely the Lord isbEx. 3:5; Josh. 5:15 in this place, and I did not know it. ” 17 And he was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven. ”

18 So early in the morning Jacob took the stone that he had put under his head and set it upcch. 31:13, 45; 35:14; [1 Sam. 7:12; 2 Sam. 18:18] for a pillard[Lev. 8:10, 11; Num. 7:1] and poured oil on the top of it. 19 He called the name of that placeech. 35:7; Judg. 1:23, 26 Bethel, but the name of the city was Luz at the first. 20 Then Jacobfch. 31:13 made a vow, saying, “If God will be with me and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat and clothing to wear, 21 g[Judg. 11:31; 2 Sam. 15:7-9] so that I come again to my father's house in peace,hDeut. 26:17 then the Lord shall be my God, 22 and this stone, which I have set up for a pillar,ich. 35:7, 14 shall be God's house. Andjch. 14:20; Lev. 27:30-33 of all that you give me I will give a full tenth to you. ”
