And he said to me,c[See ch. 2:1 above] “Son of man, eat whatever you find here.t[ch. 2:8] Eat this scroll, and go, speak to the house of Israel. ” So I opened my mouth, and he gave me this scroll to eat. And he said to me, “Son of man, feed your belly with this scroll that I give you and fill your stomach with it. ”uJer. 15:16; Rev. 10:9, 10 Then I ate it, and it was in my mouthv[Ps. 19:10; 119:103] as sweet as honey.

And he said to me,wSee ch. 2:1 “Son of man, go to the house of Israel and speak with my words to them. For you are not sent to a people of foreign speech and a hard language, but to the house of Israel— not to many peoples of foreign speech and a hard language, whose words you cannot understand.x[Matt. 11:21, 23] Surely, if I sent you to such, they would listen to you. y[John 15:20] But the house of Israel will not be willing to listen to you, for they are not willing to listen to me. Because all the house of Israelz[ch. 2:4] have a hard forehead and a stubborn heart. aSee Jer. 1:18 Behold, I have made your face as hard as their faces, and your forehead as hard as their foreheads. Likeb[Isa. 50:7] emery harder than flint have I made your forehead.cch. 2:6 Fear them not, nor be dismayed at their looks, for they are a rebellious house. ” 10 Moreover, he said to me, “Son of man,dJer. 26:2 all my words that I shall speak to you receivee[ver. 3] in your heart, and hear with your ears. 11 And go to the exiles,fch. 33:2, 12, 17, 30 to your people, and speak to them and say to them,gver. 27 ‘Thus says the Lord God, ’hch. 2:7 whether they hear or refuse to hear. ”

A Watchman for Israel

16 s[Jer. 42:7] And at the end of seven days, the word of the Lord came to me: 17 tSee ch. 2:1 “Son of man,uch. 33:7; Isa. 52:8; 56:10; Jer. 6:17; [Heb. 13:17] I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel. Whenever you hear a word from my mouth, you shallv2 Chr. 19:10; [2 Kgs. 6:10]; See ver. 18-21; ch. 33:4-6 give them warning from me. 18 wch. 33:8 If I say to the wicked,xGen. 2:17 ‘You shall surely die, ’v[See ver. 17 above] and you give him no warning, nor speak to warn the wicked from his wicked way, in order to save his life, that wicked personych. 18:18; Jer. 31:30; [John 8:21, 24] shall die for1Or in; also verses 19, 20 his iniquity,zver. 20; ch. 33:6, 8; 34:10; [ch. 18:13; Acts 18:6; 20:26] but his blood I will require at your hand. 19 ach. 33:9 But if you warn the wicked, and he does not turn from his wickedness, or from his wicked way, he shall die for his iniquity,b[1 Tim. 4:16] but youcch. 14:14, 20 will have delivered your soul. 20 dSee ch. 18:24 Again, if a righteous person turns from his righteousness and commits injustice,eJer. 6:21 and I lay a stumbling block before him, he shall die.v[See ver. 17 above] Because you have not warned him, he shall die for his sin,dSee ch. 18:24 and his righteous deeds that he has done shall not be remembered,z[See ver. 18 above] but his blood I will require at your hand. 21 But if you warn the righteous person not to sin, and he does not sin, he shall surely live, because he took warning, and you will have delivered your soul. ”

And he said to me, “Arise, go out intogch. 8:4; 37:1; Gen. 11:2 the valley,1Or plain; also verse 23 andh[Acts 9:6; 22:10] there I will speak with you. ” 23 So I arose and went out into the valley, and behold,iSee ch. 1:28 the glory of the Lord stood there, like the glory that I had seenjSee ch. 1:1 by the Chebar canal,iSee ch. 1:28 and I fell on my face. 24 kSee ch. 2:2 But the Spirit entered into me and set me on my feet, and he spoke with me and said to me, “Go, shut yourself within your house. 25 And you, O son of man, behold,lch. 4:8 cords will be placed upon you, and you shall be bound with them, so that you cannot go out among the people. 26 And I will make your tongue cling to the roof of your mouth, so thatm[Isa. 8:16] you shall be mute and unable to reprove them,n[ch. 2:3] for they are a rebellious house. 27 o[ch. 24:27; 29:21] But when I speak with you, I will open your mouth, and you shall say to them,pver. 11 ‘Thus says the Lord God. ’q[Rev. 22:11] He who will hear, let him hear; and he who will refuse to hear, let him refuse, for they are a rebellious house.
