Paul's Visions and His Thorn

12

I must go on boasting. Though there is nothing to be gained by it, I will go on to visions andxGal. 1:12; 2:2; Eph. 3:3 revelations of the Lord. I know a manySee ch. 5:17 in Christ who fourteen years ago waszver. 3; 1 Thess. 4:17; Rev. 12:5; [Ezek. 8:3; Acts 8:39] caught up toaSee Ps. 148:4 the third heaven—whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, bch. 11:11 God knows. And I know that this man was caught up intocLuke 23:43; Rev. 2:7; [Gen. 2:8] paradise—whether in the body or out of the body I do not know,b[See ver. 2 above] God knows— and he heard things that cannot be told, which man may not utter. On behalf of this man I will boast, but on my own behalf I will not boast,dSee 1 Cor. 2:3 except of my weaknesses. Though if I should wish to boast, ech. 5:13; 11:16, 17; [ver. 11] I would not be a fool, for I would be speaking the truth. But I refrain from it, so that no one may think more of me than he sees in me or hears from me. Sof[ch. 10:10] to keep me from being too elated by the surpassing greatness of the revelations,1Or . . . hears from me, even because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations. So to keep me from being too elatedg[Num. 33:55; Ezek. 28:24] a thorn was given me in the flesh,h[Luke 13:16]; See 1 Cor. 5:5 a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from being too elated. i[Matt. 26:44] Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me. But he said to me, jIsa. 43:2 “My grace is sufficient for you, forkIsa. 40:29-31; [Phil. 4:13] my power is made perfect in weakness. ” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so thatlSee 1 Cor. 2:5 the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10 m[ch. 5:15]; See Matt. 5:11, 12 For the sake of Christ, then,nRom. 5:3 I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. Concern for the Corinthian Church

11 p[ver. 6] I have been a fool! You forced me to it, for I ought to have been commended by you.
