David Organizes the Levites

David assembled all the leaders of Israel and the priests and the Levites. The Levites,sNum. 4:3, 47 thirty years old and upward, were numbered, andtver. 24; Num. 1:2 the total wasu[Num. 4:47, 48] 38,000 men. “Twenty-four thousand of these, ” David said,v[2 Chr. 2:2, 18; 34:12; Ezra 3:8, 9] “shall have charge of the work in the house of the Lord, 6,000 shall bewch. 26:29; [Deut. 16:18; 2 Chr. 19:8] officers and judges, 4,000 gatekeepers, and 4,000 shall offer praises to the Lord with the instrumentsx2 Chr. 29:25, 26; Neh. 12:36; Amos 6:5 that I have made for praise. ” y[2 Chr. 8:14; 23:18; 35:4; Ezra 6:18] And David organized them in divisionszch. 6:1, 16; Ex. 6:16; Num. 26:57 corresponding to the sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.

ach. 26:21 The sons of Gershon were Ladan and Shimei. The sons of Ladan:bch. 15:18; 29:8; [ch. 26:21] Jehiel the chief, and Zetham, and Joel, three. The sons of Shimei: Shelomoth, Haziel, and Haran, three. These were the heads of the fathers' houses of Ladan. 10 And the sons of Shimei: Jahath, Zina, and Jeush and Beriah. These four were the sons of Shimei. 11 Jahath was the chief, and Zizah the second; but Jeush and Beriah did not have many sons, therefore they became counted as a single father's house.

24 t[Num. 10:17, 21] These were the sons of Levi by their fathers' houses, the heads of fathers' housesuver. 3 as they were listed according to the number of the names of the individuals fromv2 Chr. 31:17; Ezra 3:8; [ver. 3; Num. 4:3; 8:24] twenty years old and upward who were to do the work for the service of the house of the Lord. 25 For David said, “The Lord, the God of Israel,wSee ch. 22:18 has given rest to his people, and he dwells in Jerusalem forever. 26 And so the Levites no longer needxSee Num. 4:5-15 to carry the tabernacle or any of the things for its service. ” 27 For by the last words of David the sons of Levi were numbered fromv[See ver. 24 above] twenty years old and upward. 28 For their duty was to assist the sons of Aaron for the service of the house of the Lord, having the care of the courts and the chambers, the cleansing of all that is holy, and any work for the service of the house of God. 29 Their duty was also to assist with theySee Lev. 24:5-8 showbread, thezch. 9:29; Lev. 6:20, 21 flour for the grain offering, the wafers of unleavened bread, theach. 9:31 baked offering, thebLev. 6:21; 7:12 offering mixed with oil, and allc[Lev. 19:35] measures of quantity or size. 30 And they were to stand every morning, thanking and praising the Lord, and likewise at evening, 31 and whenever burnt offerings were offered to the LorddIsa. 1:13 on Sabbaths,eSee Num. 28:11 new moons and feast days,fSee Lev. 23:2, 4 according to the number required of them, regularly before the Lord. 32 ThusgNum. 1:53 they were to keep charge of the tent of meeting and the sanctuary, and to attend the sons of Aaron, their brothers, for thehSee Num. 3:6-9 service of the house of the Lord.
