1 Now it came to pass in the thirdyearof Hosheasonof Elahkingof Israel, thatHezekiahthe sonof Ahazkingof Judahbegan to reign.nHezekiah: he is called Ezekias2 Twentyand fiveyearsoldwas he when he began to reign; and he reignedtwentyand nineyearsin Jerusalem. His mother'sname also wasAbi, the daughterof Zachariah.nAbi: also called, Abijah3 And he didthat which wasrightin the sightof the Lord, according to all that Davidhis fatherdid.
4 He removedthe high places, and brakethe images, and cut downthe groves, and brake in piecesthe brasenserpentthat Moseshad made: for unto those daysthe childrenof Israeldid burn incenseto it: and he calledit Nehushtan.nimages: Heb. statuesnNehushtan: that is, A piece of brass5 He trustedin the LordGodof Israel; so that afterhim was none like him among all the kingsof Judah, nor anythat were before him.6 For he claveto the Lord, anddepartednot from followinghim, but kepthis commandments, which the LordcommandedMoses.nfrom…: Heb. from after him7 And the Lord was with him; andhe prosperedwhithersoever he went forth: and he rebelledagainst the kingof Assyria, and served him not.8 He smotethe Philistines, evenunto Gaza, and the bordersthereof, from the towerof the watchmento the fencedcity.nGaza: Heb. 9 And it came to pass in the fourthyearof kingHezekiah, which wasthe seventhyearof Hosheasonof Elahkingof Israel, thatShalmaneserkingof Assyriacame upagainst Samaria, and besieged it.10 And at the endof threeyearsthey took it: evenin the sixthyearof Hezekiah, that isthe ninthyearof Hosheakingof Israel, Samariawas taken.11 And the kingof Assyriadid carry awayIsraelunto Assyria, and putthem in Halahand in Haborbythe riverof Gozan, and in the citiesof the Medes:12 Because they obeyednot the voiceof the Lordtheir God, but transgressedhis covenant, andall that Mosesthe servantof the Lordcommanded, and would not hearthem, nor dothem.
13 Now in the fourteenthyearof kingHezekiahdid Sennacheribkingof Assyriacome upagainst all the fencedcitiesof Judah, and took them.nSennacherib: Heb. Sanherib14 And Hezekiahkingof Judahsentto the kingof Assyriato Lachish, saying, I have offended; returnfrom me: that which thou putteston me will I bear. And the kingof Assyriaappointedunto Hezekiahkingof Judahthreehundredtalentsof silverand thirtytalentsof gold.15 And Hezekiahgavehimall the silverthat was foundin the houseof the Lord, and in the treasuresof the king'shouse.16 At that timedid Hezekiahcut offthe gold fromthe doorsof the templeof the Lord, and fromthe pillarswhich Hezekiahkingof Judahhad overlaid, and gaveit to the kingof Assyria.nit: Heb. them
17 And the kingof AssyriasentTartanand Rabsarisand Rab–shakehfrom Lachishto kingHezekiahwith a greathostagainst Jerusalem. And they went upand cameto Jerusalem. And when they were come up, they cameand stoodby the conduitof the upperpool, which isin the highwayof the fuller'sfield.ngreat: Heb. heavy18 And when they had calledto the king, there came outto them Eliakimthe sonof Hilkiah, which wasover the household, and Shebnathe scribe, and Joahthe sonof Asaphthe recorder.nscribe: or, secretary19 And Rab–shakehsaidunto them, Speakye now to Hezekiah, Thus saiththe greatking, the kingof Assyria, What confidenceisthis wherein thou trustest?20 Thou sayest, (but they are butvainwords,) I havecounseland strengthfor the war. Now on whom dost thou trust, that thou rebellest against me?nsayest: or, talkestnvain…: Heb. word of the lipsnI have…: or, but counsel and strength are for the war21 Now, behold, thou trustestupon the staffof this bruisedreed, evenupon Egypt, on which if a manlean, it will gointo his hand, and pierce it: so isPharaohkingof Egyptunto all that trust on him.ntrustest: Heb. trustest thee22 But if ye sayunto me, We trustin the Lordour God: isnot that he, whose high placesand whose altarsHezekiahhath taken away, and hath saidto Judahand Jerusalem, Ye shall worshipbeforethis altarin Jerusalem?23 Now therefore, I pray thee, give pledgesto my lordthe kingof Assyria, and I will deliverthee two thousandhorses, if thou be ableon thy part to setriders upon them.npledges: or, hostages24 How then wilt thou turn awaythe faceof onecaptainof the leastof my master'sservants, and put thy truston Egyptfor chariotsand for horsemen?25 Am I now come upwithoutthe Lordagainst this placeto destroyit? The Lordsaidto me, Go upagainst this land, and destroy it.26 Then saidEliakimthe sonof Hilkiah, and Shebna, and Joah, unto Rab–shakeh, Speak, I pray thee, to thy servantsin the Syrian language; for we understandit: and talknot with us in the Jews' languagein the earsof the people that areon the wall.27 But Rab–shakehsaidunto them, Hath my mastersentme to thy master, and to thee, to speakthese words? hath he not sent meto the menwhich siton the wall, that they may eattheir own dung, and drinktheir own piss with you?ntheir own piss: Heb. the water of their feet28 Then Rab–shakehstoodand criedwith a loudvoicein the Jews' language, and spake, saying, Hearthe wordof the greatking, the kingof Assyria:29 Thus saiththe king, Let not Hezekiahdeceiveyou: for he shall not be ableto deliveryou out of his hand:30 Neither let Hezekiahmake you trustin the Lord, saying, The Lordwill surelydeliverus, and this cityshall not be deliveredinto the handof the kingof Assyria.31 Hearkennot to Hezekiah: for thus saiththe kingof Assyria, Makean agreementwith me by a present, and come out to me, and theneatye every manof his own vine, and every oneof his fig tree, and drinkye every onethe watersof his cistern:nMake…: or, Seek my favour: Heb. Make with me a blessingncistern: or, pit32 Until I comeand take you awayto a landlike your own land, a landof cornand wine, a landof breadand vineyards, a landof oiloliveand of honey, that ye may live, and not die: and hearkennot unto Hezekiah, when he persuadethyou, saying, The Lordwill deliver us.npersuadeth: or, deceiveth33 Hath anyof the godsof the nationsdeliveredat allhis landout of the handof the kingof Assyria?34 Where arethe godsof Hamath, and of Arpad? where arethe godsof Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivah? have they deliveredSamariaout of mine hand?35 Who arethey among all the godsof the countries, that have deliveredtheir countryout of mine hand, that the Lordshould deliverJerusalemout of mine hand?36 But the peopleheld their peace, and answeredhim not a word: for the king'scommandmentwas, saying, Answer him not.37 Then cameEliakimthe sonof Hilkiah, which wasover the household, and Shebnathe scribe, and Joahthe sonof Asaphthe recorder, to Hezekiah with theirclothesrent, and toldhim the wordsof Rab–shakeh.
