1 Sayye unto your brethren, Ammi; and to your sisters, Ru–hamah.nAmmi: that is, My peoplenRu–hamah: that is, Having obtained mercy2 Pleadwith your mother, plead: for she isnot my wife, neither amI her husband: let her therefore put awayher whoredomsout of her sight, and her adulteriesfrom between her breasts;3 Lest I stripher naked, and sether as in the daythat she was born, and makeher as a wilderness, and sether like a dryland, and slayher with thirst.4 And I will not have mercyupon her children; for they bethe childrenof whoredoms.5 For their motherhath played the harlot: she that conceivedthem hath done shamefully: for she said, I will goaftermy lovers, that givememy breadand my water, my wooland my flax, mine oiland my drink.ndrink: Heb. drinks
6 Therefore, behold, I will hedgeup thy waywith thorns, and makea wall, that she shall not findher paths.nmake…: Heb. wall a wall7 And she shall followafter her lovers, but she shall not overtakethem; and she shall seekthem, but shall not findthem: then shall she say, I will goand returnto my firsthusband; for then was itbetterwith me than now.8 For she did not knowthat I gaveher corn, and wine, and oil, and multipliedher silverand gold, whichthey preparedfor Baal.nwine: Heb. new winenwhich…: or, wherewith they made Baal9 Therefore will I return, and take awaymy cornin the timethereof, and my winein the seasonthereof, and will recovermy wooland my flaxgivento coverher nakedness.nrecover: or, take away10 And now will I discoverher lewdnessin the sightof her lovers, and noneshall deliverher out of mine hand.nlewdness: Heb. folly, or, villany11 I will also cause all her mirthto cease, her feast days, her new moons, and her sabbaths, and all her solemn feasts.12 And I will destroyher vinesand her fig trees, whereof she hath said, These aremy rewardsthat my lovershave givenme: and I will makethem a forest, and the beastsof the fieldshall eat them.ndestroy: Heb. make desolate13 And I will visitupon her the daysof Baalim, wherein she burned incenseto them, and she deckedherself with her earringsand her jewels, and she wentafterher lovers, and forgatme, saiththe Lord.
14 Therefore, behold, I will allureher, and bringher into the wilderness, and speakcomfortably unto her.ncomfortably: or, friendly: Heb. to her heart15 And I will giveher her vineyardsfrom thence, and the valleyof Achorfor a doorof hope: and she shall singthere, as in the daysof her youth, and as in the daywhen she came upout of the landof Egypt.16 And it shall be at that day, saiththe Lord, thatthou shalt callme Ishi; and shalt callme no more Baali.nIshi: that is, My husbandnBaali: that is, My lord17 For I will take awaythe namesof Baalimout of her mouth, and they shall no more be rememberedby their name.18 And in that daywill I makea covenantfor them with the beastsof the field, and with the fowlsof heaven, and withthe creeping thingsof the ground: and I will breakthe bowand the swordand the battleout of the earth, and will make them to lie downsafely.19 And I will betroththee unto me for ever; yea, I will betroththee unto me in righteousness, and in judgment, and in lovingkindness, and in mercies.20 I will even betroththee unto me in faithfulness: and thou shalt knowthe Lord.21 And it shall come to pass in that day, I will hear, saiththe Lord, I will hearthe heavens, and they shall hearthe earth;22 And the earthshall hearthe corn, and the wine, and the oil; and they shall hearJezreel.23 And I will sowher unto me in the earth; and I will have mercyupon her that had not obtained mercy; and I will say to them which werenot my people, Thou artmy people; and they shall say, Thou artmy God.
