1 Hearye this wordwhich I take up against you, evena lamentation, O houseof Israel.2 The virginof Israelis fallen; she shall no morerise: she is forsakenupon her land; there isnone to raise her up.3 For thus saiththe LordGod; The citythat went outbya thousandshall leavean hundred, and that which went forthbyan hundredshall leaveten, to the houseof Israel.
4 For thus saiththe Lordunto the houseof Israel, Seekye me, and ye shall live:5 But seeknot Beth–el, nor enterinto Gilgal, and passnot to Beer–sheba: for Gilgalshall surelygo into captivity, and Beth–elshall come to nought.6 Seekthe Lord, and ye shall live; lest he break outlike firein the houseof Joseph, and devourit, and there benone to quenchitin Beth–el.7 Ye who turnjudgmentto wormwood, and leave offrighteousnessin the earth,8 Seek himthat makeththe seven starsand Orion, and turneththe shadow of deathinto the morning, and maketh the daydarkwith night: that callethfor the watersof the sea, and poureth them outupon the faceof the earth: The Lordishis name:9 That strengtheneththe spoiledagainst the strong, so that the spoiledshall comeagainst the fortress.nspoiled: Heb. spoil10 They hatehim that rebukethin the gate, and they abhorhim that speakethuprightly.11 Forasmuchtherefore as your treadingisupon the poor, and ye takefrom him burdensof wheat: ye have builthousesof hewn stone, but ye shall not dwellin them; ye have plantedpleasantvineyards, but ye shall not drinkwine of them.npleasant…: Heb. vineyards of desire12 For I knowyour manifoldtransgressionsand your mightysins: they afflictthe just, they takea bribe, and they turn asidethe poorin the gatefrom their right.na bribe: or, a ransom13 Therefore the prudentshall keep silencein that time; for it isan eviltime.14 Seekgood, and not evil, that ye may live: and so the Lord, the Godof hosts, shall be with you, as ye have spoken.15 Hatethe evil, and lovethe good, and establishjudgmentin the gate: it may be that the LordGodof hostswill be graciousunto the remnantof Joseph.16 Therefore the Lord, the Godof hosts, the Lord, saiththus; Wailingshall bein all streets; and they shall sayin all the highways, Alas! alas! and they shall callthe husbandmanto mourning, and such as are skilfulof lamentationto wailing.17 And in all vineyardsshall bewailing: for I will passthroughthee, saiththe Lord.18 Woeunto you that desirethe dayof the Lord! to what endisit for you? the dayof the Lordisdarkness, and not light.19 As if a mandid fleefroma lion, and a bearmethim; or wentinto the house, and leanedhis handon the wall, and a serpentbit him.20 Shallnot the dayof the Lordbedarkness, and not light? even very dark, and no brightness in it?
