19
1  Pilate then took Jesus and 1 Or had Him scourged A Matt 27:26scourged Him. 2  A Matt 27:27-30: Mark 15:16-19And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on His head, and put a purple robe on Him; 3  and they began to come up to Him and say, “A Matt 27:29; Mark 15:18Hail, King of the Jews!” and to B John 18:22give Him slaps in the face. 4  Pilate A John 18:33, 38came out again and *said to them, “Behold, I am bringing Him out to you so that you may know that B Luke 23:4; John 18:38; 19:6I find no guilt in Him.” 5  Jesus then came out, A John 19:2wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate *said to them, “Behold, the Man!” 6  So when the chief priests and the A Matt 26:58; John 18:3officers saw Him, they cried out saying, “Crucify, crucify!” Pilate *said to them, “Take Him yourselves and crucify Him, for B Luke 23:4; John 18:38; 19:4I find no guilt in Him.” 7  The Jews answered him, “A Lev 24:16; Matt 26:63-66We have a law, and by that law He ought to die because He B John 5:18; 10:33made Himself out to be the Son of God.”
8  Therefore when Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid; 9  and he A John 18:33entered into the 1 I.e. governor’s official residencePraetorium again and *said to Jesus, “Where are You from?” But B Matt 26:63; 27:12, 14; John 18:34-37Jesus gave him no answer. 10  So Pilate *said to Him, “You do not speak to me? The Crucifixion

Jewish AramaicHebrew, Latin and in Greek. 21  So the chief priests of the Jews were saying to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘A John 19:14, 19The King of the Jews’; but that He said, ‘I am A John 19:14, 19King of the Jews.’” 22  Pilate answered, “A Gen 43:14; Esth 4:16What I have written I have written.”
23  Then A Matt 27:35; Mark 15:24; Luke 23:34the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His outer garments and made B Acts 12:4four parts, a part to every soldier and also the 1 Gr khiton, the garment worn next to the skintunic; now the tunic was seamless, woven 2 Lit from the upper part through the whole in one piece. 24  So they said to one another, “A Ex 28:32; Matt 27:35; Mark 15:24; Luke 23:34Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, to decide whose it shall be”; B John 19:28, 36fthis was to fulfill the Scripture: “They C Ps 22:18 divided My outer garments among them, and for My clothing they cast 1 Lit a lot lots.” 25  Therefore the soldiers did these things.

28  After this, Jesus, A John 13:1; 17:4knowing that all things had already been accomplished, B John 19:24, 36fto fulfill the Scripture, *said, “C Ps 69:21I am thirsty.” 29  A jar full of sour wine was standing there; so A John 19:29, 30: Matt 27:48, 50; Mark 15:36f; Luke 23:36they put a sponge full of the sour wine upon a branch of hyssop and brought it up to His mouth. 30  Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “A John 17:4It is finished!” And He bowed His head and B Matt 27:50; Mark 15:37; Luke 23:46gave up His spirit.
Care of the Body of Jesus
31  Then the Jews, because it was A John 19:14, 42the day of preparation, so that B Deut 21:23; Josh 8:29; 10:26fthe bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (1 Lit for the day of that Sabbath was great for that Sabbath was a C Ex 12:16high day), asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. 32  So the soldiers came, and broke the legs of the first man and of the other who was A John 19:18crucified with Him; 33  but coming to Jesus, when they saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs. 34  But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately A 1 John 5:6, 8blood and water came out. 35  And he who has seen has A John 15:27; 21:24testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you also may believe. 36  For these things came to pass A John 19:24, 28to fulfill the Scripture, “B Ex 12:46; Num 9:12; Ps 34:20Not a bone of Him shall be 1 Or crushed or shattered broken.” 37  And again another Scripture says, “A Zech 12:10; Rev 1:7They shall look on Him whom they pierced.”

The Empty Tomb

1  A John 20:1-8: Matt 28:1-8; Mark 16:1-8; Luke 24:1-10Now on the first day of the week B John 19:25; 20:18Mary Magdalene *came early to the tomb, while it *was still dark, and *saw C Matt 27:60, 66; 28:2; Mark 15:46; 16:3f; Luke 24:2; John 11:38the stone already taken away from the tomb. 2  So she *ran and *came to Simon Peter and to the other A John 13:23disciple whom Jesus loved, and *said to them, “B John 20:13They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him.” 3  A Luke 24:12; John 20:3-10So Peter and the other disciple went forth, and they were going to the tomb. 4  The two were running together; and the other disciple ran ahead faster than Peter and came to the tomb first; 5  and A John 20:11stooping and looking in, he *saw the B John 19:40linen wrappings lying there; but he did not go in. 6  And so Simon Peter also *came, following him, and entered the tomb; and he *saw the linen wrappings lying there, 7  and A John 11:44the face-cloth which had been on His head, not lying with the B John 19:40linen wrappings, but rolled up in a place by itself. 8  So the other disciple who A John 20:4had first come to the tomb then also entered, and he saw and believed. 9  For as yet A Matt 22:29; John 2:22they did not understand the Scripture, B Luke 24:26ff, 46that He must rise again from the dead. 10  So the disciples went away again A Luke 24:12to their own homes.
11  A Mark 16:5But Mary was standing outside the tomb weeping; and so, as she wept, she B John 20:5stooped and looked into the tomb; 12  and she *saw A Matt 28:2f; Mark 16:5; Luke 24:4two angels in white sitting, one at the head and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus had been lying. 13  And they *said to her, “A John 20:15Woman, why are you weeping?” She *said to them, “Because B John 20:2they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him.” 14  When she had said this, she turned around and *A Matt 28:9; Mark 16:9saw Jesus standing there, and B John 21:4did not know that it was Jesus. 15  Jesus *said to her, “A John 20:13Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” Supposing Him to be the gardener, she *said to Him, “Sir, if you have carried Him away, tell me where you have laid Him, and I will take Him away.” 16  Jesus *said to her, “Mary!” She turned and *said to Him A John 5:2in 1 I.e. Jewish AramaicHebrew, “B Matt 23:7; Mark 10:51Rabboni!” (which means, Teacher). 17  Jesus *said to her, “Stop clinging to Me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to A Matt 28:10My brethren and say to them, ‘I B Mark 12:26; 16:19; John 7:33ascend to My Father and your Father, and My God and your God.’” 18  A John 20:1Mary Magdalene *came, B Mark 16:10; Luke 24:10, 23announcing to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord,” and that He had said these things to her.
Jesus among His Disciples
19  So when it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and when the doors were shut where the disciples were, for A John 7:13fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and *said to them, “1 Lit Peace to you B Luke 24:36; John 14:27; 20:21, 26Peace be with you.” 20  And when He had said this, A Luke 24:39, 40; John 19:34He showed them both His hands and His side. The disciples then B John 16:20, 22rejoiced when they saw the Lord. 21  So Jesus said to them again, “A Luke 24:36; John 14:27; 20:19, 26Peace be with you; B John 17:18as the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” 22  And when He had said this, He breathed on them and *said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23  A Matt 16:19; 18:18If you forgive the sins of any, their sins 1 I.e. have previously been forgivenhave been forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they have been retained.”
24  But A John 11:16Thomas, one of B John 6:67the twelve, called 1 I.e. the TwinA John 11:16Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. 25  So the other disciples were saying to him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see in A John 20:20His hands the imprint of the nails, and put my finger into the place of the nails, and put my hand into His side, B Mark 16:11I will not believe.”
26  1 Or A week later After eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus *came, the doors having been 2 Or locked shut, and stood in their midst and said, “A Luke 24:36; John 14:27; 20:19, 21Peace be with you.” 27  Then He *said to Thomas, “A Luke 24:40; John 20:25Reach here with your finger, and see My hands; and reach here your hand and put it into My side; and do not be unbelieving, but believing.” 28  Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!” 29  Jesus *said to him, “Because you have seen Me, have you believed? A 1 Pet 1:8Blessed are they who did not see, and yet believed.”
Why This Gospel Was Written
30  A John 21:25Therefore many other 1 Or attesting miracles B John 2:11signs Jesus also performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31  but these have been written A John 19:35so that you may believe that Jesus is 1 I.e. the Messiahthe Christ, B Matt 4:3the Son of God; and that C John 3:15believing you may have life in His name.
Jesus Appears at the Sea of Galilee

1  After these things Jesus 1 Or made Himself visible A Mark 16:12; John 21:14manifested Himself B John 20:19, 26again to the disciples at the C John 6:1Sea of Tiberias, and He manifested Himself in this way. 2  Simon Peter, and A John 11:16Thomas called 1 I.e. the TwinDidymus, and B John 1:45ffNathanael of C John 2:1Cana in Galilee, and D Matt 4:21; Mark 1:19; Luke 5:10the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples were together. 3  Simon Peter *said to them, “I am going fishing.” They *said to him, “We will also come with you.” They went out and got into the boat; and A Luke 5:5that night they caught nothing.
4  But when the day was now breaking, Jesus stood on the beach; yet the disciples did not A Luke 24:16; John 20:14know that it was Jesus. 5  So Jesus *said to them, “Children, A Luke 24:41you do not have 1 Lit something eaten with bread any fish, do you?” They answered Him, “No.” 6  And He said to them, “A Luke 5:4ffCast the net on the right-hand side of the boat and you will find a catch.” So they cast, and then they were not able to haul it in because of the great number of fish. 7  A John 13:23; 21:20Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved *said to Peter, “It is the Lord.” So when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put his outer garment on (for he was stripped for work), and threw himself into the sea. 8  But the other disciples came in the little boat, for they were not far from the land, but about 1 Lit 200 cubits one hundred yards away, dragging the net full of fish.
9  So when they got out on the land, they *saw a charcoal A John 18:18fire already laid and B John 6:9, 11; 21:10, 13fish placed on it, and bread. 10  Jesus *said to them, “Bring some of the A John 6:9, 11; 21:9, 13fish which you have now caught.” 11  Simon Peter went up and drew the net to land, full of large fish, a hundred and fifty-three; and although there were so many, the net was not torn.
Jesus Provides
12  Jesus *said to them, “Come and have A John 21:15breakfast.” None of the disciples ventured to question Him, “Who are You?” knowing that it was the Lord. 13  Jesus *came and *took A John 21:9the bread and *gave it to them, and the B John 6:9, 11; 21:9, 10fish likewise. 14  This is now the A John 20:19, 26third time that Jesus 1 Or made Himself visible was manifested to the disciples, after He was raised from the dead.
The Love Motivation
15  So when they had A John 21:12finished breakfast, Jesus *said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you 1 Gr agapao B Matt 26:33; Mark 14:29; John 13:37love Me more than these?” He *said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I 2 Gr phileo love You.” He *said to him, “Tend C Luke 12:32My lambs.” 16  He *said to him again a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you 1 Gr agapao love Me?” He *said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I 2 Gr phileo love You.” He *said to him, “A Matt 2:6; Acts 20:28; 1 Pet 5:2; Rev 7:17Shepherd My sheep.” 17  He *said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you 1 Gr phileo love Me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him A John 13:38the third time, “Do you 1 Gr phileo love Me?” And he said to Him, “Lord, B John 16:30You know all things; You know that I 1 Gr phileo love You.” Jesus *said to him, “C John 21:15, 16Tend My sheep.
Our Times Are in His Hand
18  Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were younger, you used to gird yourself and walk wherever you wished; but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands and someone else will gird you, and bring you where you do not wish to go.” 19  Now this He said, A John 12:33; 18:32signifying by B 2 Pet 1:14what kind of death he would glorify God. And when He had spoken this, He *said to him, “C Matt 8:22; 16:24; John 21:22Follow Me!”
20  Peter, turning around, *saw the A John 21:7disciple whom Jesus loved following them; the one who also had B John 13:25leaned back on His bosom at the supper and said, “Lord, who is the one who betrays You?” 21  So Peter seeing him *said to Jesus, “Lord, and what about this man?” 22  Jesus *said to him, “If I want him to remain A Matt 16:27f; 1 Cor 4:5; 11:26; James 5:7; Rev 2:25until I come, what is that to you? You B Matt 8:22; 16:24; John 21:19follow Me!” 23  Therefore this saying went out among A Acts 1:15the brethren that that disciple would not die; yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but only, “If I want him to remain B Matt 16:27f; 1 Cor 4:5; 11:26; James 5:7; Rev 2:25until I come, what is that to you?”
24  This is the disciple who A John 15:27is testifying to these things and wrote these things, and we know that his testimony is true.
25  And there are also A John 20:30many other things which Jesus did, which if they *were written in detail, I suppose that even the world itself *would not contain the books that *would be written.

The Ascension

The Upper Room

Blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke.
20  ‘The sun will be turned into darkness
And the moon into blood,
Before the great and glorious day of the Lord shall come.
