The Lost Sheep
15
Now all the A Luke 5:29tax collectors and the 1 I.e. irreligious Jewssinners were coming near Him to listen to Him. Both the Pharisees and the scribes began to grumble, saying, “This man receives sinners and A Matt 9:11eats with them.”
So He told them this parable, saying, A Matt 18:12-14; Luke 15:4-7What man among you, if he has a hundred sheep and has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the 1 Lit wilderness open pasture and go after the one which is lost until he finds it? When he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost!’ I tell you that in the same way, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.
The Lost Coin
Or what woman, if she has ten 1 Gr drachmas, one drachma was a day’s wagessilver coins and loses one coin, does not light a lamp and sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it? When she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin which I had lost!’ 10  In the same way, I tell you, there is joy A Matt 10:32; Luke 15:7in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”
The Prodigal Son
11 And He said, “A man had two sons. 12  The younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me A Deut 21:17the share of the estate that falls to me.’ So he divided his 1 Lit living B Mark 12:44; Luke 15:30wealth between them. 13  And not many days later, the younger son gathered everything together and went on a journey into a distant country, and there he squandered his estate with loose living. 14  Now when he had spent everything, a severe famine occurred in that country, and he began to be impoverished. 15  So he went and 1 Lit was joined to hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country, and he sent him into his fields to feed swine. 16  And he would have gladly filled his stomach with the 1 I.e. of the carob treepods that the swine were eating, and no one was giving anything to him. 17  But when he came to 1 Lit himself his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired men have more than enough bread, but I am dying here with hunger! 18  I will get up and go to my father, and will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven, and 1 Lit before you in your sight; 19  I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me as one of your hired men.” ’ 20  So he got up and came to 1 Lit his own his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion for him, and ran and 2 Lit fell on his neck A Gen 45:14; 46:29; Acts 20:37embraced him and kissed him. 21  And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ 22  But the father said to his slaves, ‘Quickly bring out A Zech 3:4; Rev 6:11the best robe and put it on him, and B Gen 41:42put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet; 23  and bring the fattened calf, kill it, and let us eat and celebrate; 24  for this son of mine was A Matt 8:22; Luke 9:60; 15:32; Rom 11:15; Eph 2:1, 5; 5:14; Col 2:13; 1 Tim 5:6dead and has come to life again; he was lost and has been found.’ And they began to celebrate.
25  Now his older son was in the field, and when he came and approached the house, he heard music and dancing. 26  And he summoned one of the servants and began inquiring what these things could be. 27  And he said to him, ‘Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has received him back safe and sound.’ 28  But he became angry and was not willing to go in; and his father came out and began pleading with him. 29  But he answered and said to his father, ‘Look! For so many years I have been serving you and I have never 1 Or disobeyed neglected a command of yours; and yet you have never given me a young goat, so that I might celebrate with my friends; 30  but when this son of yours came, who has devoured your 1 Lit living A Prov 29:3; Luke 15:12wealth with prostitutes, you killed the fattened calf for him.’ 31  And he said to him, ‘Son, you 1 Lit are always with me have always been with me, and all that is mine is yours. 32  But we had to celebrate and rejoice, for this brother of yours was A Luke 15:24dead and has begun to live, and was lost and has been found.’ ”
The Unrighteous Steward
16
Now He was also saying to the disciples, “There was a rich man who had a manager, and this manager was 1 Or accused reported to him as A Luke 15:13squandering his possessions. And he called him and said to him, ‘What is this I hear about you? Give an accounting of your management, for you can no longer be manager.’ The manager said to himself, ‘What shall I do, since my 1 Or lord master is taking the management away from me? I am not strong enough to dig; I am ashamed to beg. I know what I shall do, so that when I am removed from the management people will welcome me into their homes.’ And he summoned each one of his 1 Or lord’s master’s debtors, and he began saying to the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’ And he said, ‘A hundred 1 Gr baths, a Heb unit of measure equaling about 7 1/2 gal.measures of oil.’ And he said to him, ‘Take your bill, and sit down quickly and write fifty.’ Then he said to another, ‘And how much do you owe?’ And he said, ‘A hundred 1 Gr kors, one kor equals between 10 and 12 bumeasures of wheat.’ He *said to him, ‘Take your bill, and write eighty.’ And his 1 Or lord master praised the unrighteous manager because he had acted shrewdly; for the sons of A Matt 12:32; Luke 20:34this age are more shrewd in relation to their own 2 Lit generation kind than the B John 12:36; Eph 5:8; 1 Thess 5:5sons of light. And I say to you, A Matt 19:21; Luke 11:41; 12:33make friends for yourselves by means of the 1 Gr mamonas, for Aram mamon (mammon); i.e. wealth, etc., personified as an object of worshipB Matt 6:24; Luke 16:11, 13wealth of unrighteousness, so that when it fails, C Luke 16:4they will receive you into the eternal dwellings.
10  A Matt 25:21, 23He who is faithful in a very little thing is faithful also in much; and he who is unrighteous in a very little thing is unrighteous also in much. 11  Therefore if you have not been faithful in the use of unrighteous 1 Gr mamonas, for Aram mamon (mammon); i.e. wealth, etc., personified as an object of worshipA Luke 16:9wealth, who will entrust the true riches to you? 12  And if you have not been faithful in the use of that which is another’s, who will give you that which is your own? 13  A Matt 6:24No 1 Or house-servant servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and 2 Gr mamonas, for Aram mamon (mammon); i.e. wealth, etc., personified as an object of worshipB Luke 16:9wealth.”
14  Now the Pharisees, who were A 2 Tim 3:2lovers of money, were listening to all these things and B Luke 23:35were scoffing at Him. 15 And He said to them, “You are those who A Luke 10:29; 18:9, 14justify yourselves 1 Lit before in the sight of men, but B 1 Sam 16:7; Prov 21:2; Acts 1:24; Rom 8:27God knows your hearts; for that which is highly esteemed among men is detestable 1 Lit before in the sight of God.
16  A Matt 11:12fThe Law and the Prophets were proclaimed until John; since that time B Matt 4:23the gospel of the kingdom of God 1 Lit is preached has been preached, and everyone is forcing his way into it. 17  A Matt 5:18But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for one 1 I.e. projection of a letter (serif)stroke of a letter of the Law to fail.
18  A Matt 5:32; 1 Cor 7:10, 11Everyone who 1 Or sends away divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery, and he who marries one who is 2 Or sent away divorced from a husband commits adultery.
The Rich Man and Lazarus
19  Now there was a rich man, and he habitually dressed in purple and fine linen, joyously living in splendor every day. 20  And a poor man named Lazarus A Acts 3:2was laid at his gate, covered with sores, 21  and longing to be fed with the crumbs which were falling from the rich man’s table; besides, even the dogs were coming and licking his sores. 22  Now the poor man died and was carried away by the angels to A John 1:18; 13:23Abraham’s bosom; and the rich man also died and was buried. 23  In A Matt 11:23Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torment, and *saw Abraham far away and Lazarus in his bosom. 24  And he cried out and said, ‘A Luke 3:8; 16:30; 19:9Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus so that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool off my tongue, for I am in agony in B Matt 25:41this flame.’ 25  But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that A Luke 6:24during your life you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus bad things; but now he is being comforted here, and you are in agony. 26  And 1 Lit in all these things besides all this, between us and you there is a great chasm fixed, so that those who wish to come over from here to you will not be able, and that none may cross over from there to us.’ 27  And he said, ‘Then I beg you, father, that you send him to my father’s house 28  for I have five brothers—in order that he may A Acts 2:40; 8:25; 10:42; 18:5; 20:21ff; 23:11; 28:23; Gal 5:3; Eph 4:17; 1 Thess 2:11; 4:6warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’ 29  But Abraham *said, ‘They have A Luke 4:17; John 5:45-47; Acts 15:21Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.’ 30  But he said, ‘No, A Luke 3:8; 16:24; 19:9father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent!’ 31  But he said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be persuaded even if someone rises from the dead.’ ”
Instructions
17
He said to His disciples, A Matt 18:7; 1 Cor 11:19; 1 Tim 4:1It is inevitable that 1 Or temptations to sin stumbling blocks come, but woe to him through whom they come! A Matt 18:6; Mark 9:42; 1 Cor 8:12It 1 Lit is would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea, than that he would cause one of these little ones to stumble. 1 Lit Take heed to yourselves Be on your guard! A Matt 18:15If your brother sins, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him. And if he sins against you A Matt 18:21fseven times a day, and returns to you seven times, saying, ‘I repent,’ 1 Lit you shall forgive forgive him.”
A Mark 6:30The apostles said to B Luke 7:13the Lord, “Increase our faith!” And A Luke 7:13the Lord said, If you 1 Lit have had faith like B Matt 13:31; 17:20; Mark 4:31; Luke 13:19a mustard seed, you would say to this C Luke 19:4mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and be planted in the sea’; and it would 2 Lit have obeyed obey you.
Which of you, having a slave plowing or tending sheep, will say to him when he has come in from the field, ‘Come immediately and 1 Lit recline sit down to eat’? But will he not say to him, ‘A Luke 12:37Prepare something for me to eat, and properly 1 Lit gird clothe yourself and serve me while I eat and drink; and 2 Lit after these things afterward you 3 Lit will may eat and drink’? He does not thank the slave because he did the things which were commanded, does he? 10  So you too, when you do all the things which are commanded you, say, ‘We are unworthy slaves; we have done only that which we ought to have done.’ ”
Ten Lepers Cleansed
11  While He was A Luke 9:51on the way to Jerusalem, B Luke 9:52ff; John 4:3fHe was passing 1 Lit through the middle of; or along the borders of between Samaria and Galilee. 12 As He entered a village, ten leprous men who A Lev 13:45fstood at a distance met Him; 13 and they raised their voices, saying, “Jesus, A Luke 5:5Master, have mercy on us!” 14 When He saw them, He said to them, A Lev 14:1-32; Matt 8:4; Luke 5:14Go and show yourselves to the priests.” And as they were going, they were cleansed. 15  Now one of them, when he saw that he had been healed, turned back, A Matt 9:8glorifying God with a loud voice, 16 and he fell on his face at His feet, giving thanks to Him. And he was a A Matt 10:5Samaritan. 17  Then Jesus answered and said, “Were there not ten cleansed? But the ninewhere are they? 18  1 Lit Were there not found those who Was no one found who returned to A Matt 9:8give glory to God, except this foreigner?” 19 And He said to him, Stand up and go; A Matt 9:22; Luke 18:42your faith 1 Lit has saved you has made you well.”
20  Now having been questioned by the Pharisees A Luke 19:11; Acts 1:6as to when the kingdom of God was coming, He answered them and said, “The kingdom of God is not coming with 1 Lit observation B Luke 14:1signs to be observed; 21  nor will A Luke 17:23they say, ‘Look, here it is!or, ‘There it is!’ For behold, the kingdom of God is 1 Or within you in your midst.”
Second Coming Foretold
22 And He said to the disciples, A Matt 9:15; Mark 2:20; Luke 5:35The days will come when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you will not see it. 23  A Matt 24:23; Mark 13:21; Luke 21:8They will say to you, ‘Look there! Look here!’ Do not go away, and do not run after them. 24  A Matt 24:27For just like the lightning, when it flashes out of one part 1 Lit under heaven of the sky, shines to the other part 1 Lit under heaven of the sky, so will the Son of Man be in His day. 25  A Matt 16:21; Luke 9:22But first He must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation. 26  A Luke 17:26, 27: Matt 24:37-39And just as it happened B Gen 6:5-8; 7in the days of Noah, so it will be also in the days of the Son of Man: 27  they were eating, they were drinking, they were marrying, they were being given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all. 28  1 Lit In the same way as It was the same as happened in A Gen 19the days of Lot: they were eating, they were drinking, they were buying, they were selling, they were planting, they were building; 29  but on the day that Lot went out from Sodom it rained fire and 1 I.e. burning sulfurbrimstone from heaven and destroyed them all. 30  It will be 1 Lit according to the same things just the same on the day that the Son of Man A Matt 16:27; 1 Cor 1:7; Col 3:4; 2 Thess 1:7; 1 Pet 1:7; 4:13; 1 John 2:28is revealed. 31  On that day, the one who is A Matt 24:17, 18; Mark 13:15f; Luke 21:21on the housetop and whose goods are in the house must not go down to take them out; and likewise the one who is in the field must not turn back. 32  A Gen 19:26Remember Lot’s wife. 33  A Matt 10:39Whoever seeks to keep his 1 Or soul life will lose it, and whoever loses his life will preserve it. 34  I tell you, on that night there will be two in one bed; one will be taken and the other will be left. 35  A Matt 24:41There will be two women grinding at the same place; one will be taken and the other will be left. 36 [ 1 Early mss do not contain this vA Matt 24:40Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other will be left.”] 37 And answering they *said to Him, “Where, Lord?” And He said to them, A Matt 24:28Where the body is, there also the 1 Or eagles vultures will be gathered.”
Parables on Prayer
18
Now He was telling them a parable to show that at all times they A Luke 11:5-10ought to pray and not to B 2 Cor 4:1lose heart, saying, “In a certain city there was a judge who did not fear God and did not A Luke 18:4; 20:13; Heb 12:9respect man. There was a widow in that city, and she kept coming to him, saying, ‘1 Lit Do me justice Give me legal protection from my opponent.’ For a while he was unwilling; but afterward he said to himself, ‘Even though I do not fear God nor A Luke 18:2; 20:13; Heb 12:9respect man, yet A Luke 11:8because this widow bothers me, I will 1 Lit do her justice give her legal protection, otherwise by continually coming she will 2 Lit hit me under the eye B 1 Cor 9:27wear me out.’ ” And A Luke 7:13the Lord said, Hear what the unrighteous judge *said; now, will not God A Rev 6:10bring about justice for His B Matt 24:22; Rom 8:33; Col 3:12; 2 Tim 2:10; Titus 1:1elect who cry to Him day and night, 1 Or and yet He is very patient toward them and will He C 2 Pet 3:9delay long over them? I tell you that He will bring about justice for them quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, A Luke 17:26ffwill He find 1 Lit the faith faith on the earth?”
The Pharisee and the Publican
And He also told this parable to some people who A Luke 16:15trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and B Rom 14:3, 10viewed others with contempt: 10  Two men A 1 Kin 10:5; 2 Kin 20:5, 8; Acts 3:1went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11  The Pharisee A Matt 6:5; Mark 11:25; Luke 22:41stood and was praying this to himself: ‘God, I thank You that I am not like other people: swindlers, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. 12  I A Matt 9:14fast twice a week; I B Luke 11:42pay tithes of all that I get.’ 13  But the tax collector, A Matt 6:5; Mark 11:25; Luke 22:41standing some distance away, B Ezra 9:6was even unwilling to lift up his eyes to heaven, but C Luke 23:48was beating his breast, saying, ‘God, be 1 Or propitious merciful to me, the sinner!’ 14  I tell you, this man went to his house justified rather than the other; A Matt 23:12; Luke 14:11for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted.”
15  A Luke 18:15-17: Matt 19:13-15; Mark 10:13-16And they were bringing even their babies to Him so that He would touch them, but when the disciples saw it, they began rebuking them. 16 But Jesus called for them, saying, Permit the children to come to Me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. 17  Truly I say to you, A Matt 18:3; 19:14; Mark 10:15; 1 Cor 14:20; 1 Pet 2:2whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it at all.
The Rich Young Ruler
18  A Luke 18:18-30: Matt 19:16-29; Mark 10:17-30; Luke 10:25-28A ruler questioned Him, saying, “Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” 19 And Jesus said to him, Why do you call Me good? No one is good except God alone. 20  You know the commandments, ‘A Ex 20:12-16; Deut 5:16-20Do not commit adultery, Do not murder, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother.’ ” 21 And he said, “All these things I have kept from my youth.” 22 When Jesus heard this, He said to him, One thing you still lack; A Matt 19:21; Luke 12:33sell all that you possess and distribute it to the poor, and you shall have B Matt 6:20treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” 23 But when he had heard these things, he became very sad, for he was extremely rich. 24 And Jesus looked at him and said, A Matt 19:23; Mark 10:23fHow hard it is for those who are wealthy to enter the kingdom of God! 25  For A Matt 19:24; Mark 10:25it is easier for a camel to 1 Lit enter go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” 26 They who heard it said, “Then who can be saved?” 27 But He said, A Matt 19:26The things that are impossible with people are possible with God.”
28  Peter said, “Behold, A Luke 5:11we have left 1 Lit our own things our own homes and followed You.” 29 And He said to them, Truly I say to you, A Matt 6:33; 19:29; Mark 10:29fthere is no one who has left house or wife or brothers or parents or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God, 30  who will not receive many times as much at this time and in A Matt 12:32the age to come, eternal life.”
31  A Luke 18:31-33: Matt 20:17-19; Mark 10:32-34Then He took the twelve aside and said to them, Behold, B Luke 9:51we are going up to Jerusalem, and C Ps 22; Is 53all things which are written through the prophets about the Son of Man will be accomplished. 32  A Matt 16:21For He will be 1 Or betrayed handed over to the Gentiles, and will be mocked and mistreated and spit upon, 33  and after they have scourged Him, they will kill Him; and the third day He will rise again.” 34 But A Mark 9:32; Luke 9:45the disciples understood none of these things, and the meaning of this statement was hidden from them, and they did not comprehend the things that were said.
Bartimaeus Receives Sight
35  A Luke 18:35-43: Matt 20:29-34; Mark 10:46-52As 1 Lit He B Matt 20:29; Mark 10:46; Luke 19:1Jesus was approaching Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the road begging. 36  Now hearing a crowd going by, he began to inquire what this was. 37 They told him that Jesus of Nazareth was passing by. 38 And he called out, saying, “Jesus, A Matt 9:27; Luke 18:39Son of David, have mercy on me!” 39  Those who led the way were sternly telling him to be quiet; but he kept crying out all the more, “A Luke 18:38Son of David, have mercy on me!” 40 And Jesus stopped and commanded that he be brought to Him; and when he came near, He questioned him, 41  What do you want Me to do for you?” And he said, “Lord, I want to regain my sight!” 42 And Jesus said to him, 1 Lit Regain your sight Receive your sight; A Matt 9:22your faith has 2 Lit saved you made you well.” 43  Immediately he regained his sight and began following Him, A Matt 9:8glorifying God; and when B Luke 9:43; 13:17; 19:37all the people saw it, they gave praise to God.
Zaccheus Converted
19
He A Luke 18:35entered Jericho and was passing through. And there was a man called by the name of Zaccheus; he was a chief tax collector and he was rich. Zaccheus was trying to see who Jesus was, and was unable because of the crowd, for he was small in stature. So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a 1 I.e. fig-mulberryA 1 Kin 10:27; 1 Chr 27:28; 2 Chr 1:15; 9:27; Ps 78:47; Is 9:10; Luke 17:6sycamore tree in order to see Him, for He was about to pass through that way. When Jesus came to the place, He looked up and said to him, Zaccheus, hurry and come down, for today I must stay at your house.” And he hurried and came down and received Him 1 Lit rejoicing gladly. When they saw it, they all began to grumble, saying, “He has gone 1 Or to find lodging to be the guest of a man who is a sinner.” Zaccheus stopped and said to A Luke 7:13the Lord, “Behold, Lord, half of my possessions I 1 Lit am giving will give to the poor, and if I have B Luke 3:14defrauded anyone of anything, I 1 Lit am giving will give back C Ex 22:1; Lev 6:5; Num 5:7; 2 Sam 12:6four times as much.” And Jesus said to him, Today salvation has come to this house, because he, too, is A Luke 3:8; 13:16; Rom 4:16; Gal 3:7a son of Abraham. 10  For A Matt 18:11the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”
Parable of Money Usage
11 While they were listening to these things, Jesus went on to tell a parable, because A Luke 9:51He was near Jerusalem, and they supposed that B Luke 17:20the kingdom of God was going to appear immediately. 12  So He said, A Matt 25:14-30; Luke 19:12-27A nobleman went to a distant country to receive a kingdom for himself, and then return. 13  And he called ten of his slaves, and gave them ten 1 A mina is equal to about 100 days’ wagesminas and said to them, ‘Do business with this 2 Lit while I am coming until I come back. 14  But his citizens hated him and sent 1 Or an embassy a delegation after him, saying, ‘We do not want this man to reign over us.’ 15  When he returned, after receiving the kingdom, he ordered that these slaves, to whom he had given the money, be called to him so that he might know what business they had done. 16  The first appeared, saying, ‘1 Lit Lord Master, your 2 V 13, note 1mina has made ten minas more.’ 17  And he said to him, ‘Well done, good slave, because you have been A Luke 16:10faithful in a very little thing, you are to be in authority over ten cities.’ 18  The second came, saying, ‘Your 1 V 13, note 1mina, 2 Lit lord master, has made five minas.’ 19  And he said to him also, ‘And you are to be over five cities.’ 20  Another came, saying, ‘Master, here is your mina, which I kept put away in a handkerchief; 21  for I was afraid of you, because you are an exacting man; you take up what you did not lay down and reap what you did not sow.’ 22  He *said to him, ‘1 Lit Out of your own mouth By your own words I will judge you, you worthless slave. Did you know that I am an exacting man, taking up what I did not lay down and reaping what I did not sow? 23  Then why did you not put my money in the bank, and having come, I would have collected it with interest?’ 24  Then he said to the bystanders, ‘Take the mina away from him and give it to the one who has the ten minas.’ 25  And they said to him, ‘Master, he has ten minas already. 26  A Matt 13:12; Mark 4:25; Luke 8:18I tell you that to everyone who has, more shall be given, but from the one who does not have, even what he does have shall be taken away. 27  But A Luke 19:14these enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and B Matt 22:7; Luke 20:16slay them in my presence.”
Triumphal Entry
28 After He had said these things, He A Mark 10:32was going on ahead, B Luke 9:51going up to Jerusalem.
29  A Luke 19:29-38: Matt 21:1-9; Mark 11:1-10When He approached Bethphage and B Matt 21:17Bethany, near the 1 Or hill...Olive Grove; Mount of Olivesmount that is called C Luke 21:37; Acts 1:12Olivet, He sent two of the disciples, 30  saying, Go into the village ahead of you; there, as you enter, you will find a colt tied on which no one yet has ever sat; untie it and bring it here. 31  If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ you shall say, ‘The Lord has need of it.’ ” 32  So those who were sent went away and found it just as He had told them. 33 As they were untying the colt, its 1 Lit lords owners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?” 34 They said, “The Lord has need of it.” 35 They brought it to Jesus, A Luke 19:35-38: Matt 21:4-9; Mark 11:7-10; John 12:12-15and they threw their coats on the colt and put Jesus on it. 36 As He was going, they were spreading their coats on the road. 37 As soon as He was approaching, near the descent of A Matt 21:1; Luke 19:29the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of the disciples began to B Luke 18:43praise God 1 Lit rejoicing joyfully with a loud voice for all the 2 Or works of power miracles which they had seen, 38  shouting:
A Ps 118:26 Blessed is the B Matt 2:2; 25:34 King who comes in the name of the Lord;
Peace in heaven and C Matt 21:9; Luke 2:14glory in the highest!”
39  A Matt 21:15fSome of the Pharisees 1 Lit from in the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, rebuke Your disciples.” 40 But Jesus answered, “I tell you, if these become silent, A Hab 2:11the stones will cry out!”
41  When He approached Jerusalem, He saw the city and A Luke 13:34, 35wept over it, 42  saying, If you had known in this day, even you, the things which make for peace! But now they have been hidden from your eyes. 43  For the days will come upon you 1 Lit and when your enemies will A Eccl 9:14; Is 29:3; 37:33; Jer 6:6; Ezek 4:2; 26:8throw up a 2 I.e. a dirt wall or mound for siege purposesbarricade against you, and B Luke 21:20surround you and hem you in on every side, 44  and they will level you to the ground and your children within you, and A Matt 24:2; Mark 13:2; Luke 21:6they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not recognize B 1 Pet 2:12the time of your visitation.”
Traders Driven from the Temple
45  A Luke 19:45, 46: Matt 21:12, 13; Mark 11:15-17; John 2:13-16Jesus entered the temple and began to drive out those who were selling, 46  saying to them, “It is written, ‘A Is 56:7; Jer 7:11; Matt 21:13; Mark 11:17And My house shall be a house of prayer,’ B Jer 7:11but you have made it a robbers 1 Lit cave den.”
47 And A Matt 26:55; Luke 21:37He was teaching daily in the temple; but the chief priests and the scribes and the leading men among the people B Luke 20:19were trying to destroy Him, 48 and they could not find 1 Lit what they would do anything that they might do, for all the people were hanging on to 2 Lit Him, listening every word He said.
Jesus’ Authority Questioned
20
A Luke 20:1-8: Matt 21:23-27; Mark 11:27-33On one of the days while B Matt 26:55He was teaching the people in the temple and C Luke 8:1preaching the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes with the elders D Acts 4:1; 6:12confronted Him, and they spoke, saying to Him, “Tell us by what authority You are doing these things, or who is the one who gave You this authority?” Jesus answered and said to them, “I will also ask you a 1 Lit word question, and you tell Me: Was the baptism of John from heaven or from men?” They reasoned among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ He will say, ‘Why did you not believe him?’ But if we say, ‘From men,’ all the people will stone us to death, for they are convinced that John was a A Matt 11:9; Luke 7:29, 30prophet.” So they answered that they did not know where it came from. And Jesus said to them, Nor 1 Lit do I tell will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”
Parable of the Vine-growers
A Luke 20:9-19: Matt 21:33-46; Mark 12:1-12And He began to tell the people this parable: “A man planted a vineyard and rented it out to 1 Or tenant farmers, also vv 10, 14, 16vine-growers, and went on a journey for a long time. 10  At the harvest time he sent a slave to the vine-growers, so that they would give him some of the produce of the vineyard; but the vine-growers beat him and sent him away empty-handed. 11  And he proceeded to send another slave; and they beat him also and treated him shamefully and sent him away empty-handed. 12  And he proceeded to send a third; and this one also they wounded and cast out. 13  The 1 Lit lord owner of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? I will send my beloved son; perhaps they will A Luke 18:2respect him.’ 14  But when the vine-growers saw him, they reasoned with one another, saying, ‘This is the heir; let us kill him so that the inheritance will be ours.’ 15  So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. What, then, will the 1 Lit lord owner of the vineyard do to them? 16  He will come and A Matt 21:41; Mark 12:9; Luke 19:27destroy these vine-growers and will give the vineyard to others.” When they heard it, they said, “B Rom 3:4, 6, 31; 6:2, 15; 7:7, 13; 9:14; 11:1, 11; 1 Cor 6:15; Gal 2:17; 3:21; 6:14May it never be!” 17 But 1 Lit He Jesus looked at them and said, What then is this that is written:
A Ps 118:22The stone which the builders rejected,
This became B Eph 2:20; 1 Pet 2:6the chief corner stone’?
18  A Matt 21:44Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces; but on whomever it falls, it will scatter him like dust.”
Tribute to Caesar
19 The scribes and the chief priests A Luke 19:47tried to lay hands on Him that very hour, and they feared the people; for they understood that He spoke this parable against them. 20  A Luke 20:20-26: Matt 22:15-22; Mark 12:13-17; Mark 3:2So they watched Him, and sent spies who 1 Lit falsely represented themselves pretended to be righteous, in order B Luke 11:54; 20:26that they might 2 Lit take hold of His word catch Him in some statement, so that they could deliver Him to the rule and the authority of C Matt 27:2the governor. 21 They questioned Him, saying, “Teacher, we know that You speak and teach correctly, and You 1 Lit do not receive a face are not partial to any, but teach the way of God in truth. 22 Is it 1 Or permissible lawful for us A Matt 17:25; Luke 23:2to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?” 23 But He detected their trickery and said to them, 24  Show Me a 1 The denarius was a day’s wagesdenarius. Whose 2 Lit image likeness and inscription does it have?” They said, “Caesar’s.” 25 And He said to them, Then A Matt 22:21; Mark 12:17render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” 26 And they were unable to 1 Lit catch His statement A Luke 11:54catch Him in a saying in the presence of the people; and being amazed at His answer, they became silent.
Is There a Resurrection?
27  A Luke 20:27-40: Matt 22:23-33; Mark 12:18-27Now there came to Him some of the B Acts 23:8Sadducees (who say that there is no resurrection), 28 and they questioned Him, saying, “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that A Deut 25:5 if a man’s brother dies, having a wife, and he is childless, his brother should 1 Lit take marry the wife and raise up children to his brother. 29  Now there were seven brothers; and the first took a wife and died childless; 30 and the second 31 and the third 1 Lit took married her; and in the same way 2 Lit the seven also all seven 3 Lit left no children, and died died, leaving no children. 32  Finally the woman died also. 33 In the resurrection therefore, which one’s wife will she be? For 1 Lit the all seven 2 Lit had her as wife had married her.”
34  Jesus said to them, “The sons of A Matt 12:32; Luke 16:8this age marry and are given in marriage, 35  but those who are considered worthy to attain to A Matt 12:32; Luke 16:8that age and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage; 36  for they cannot even die anymore, because they are like angels, and are A Rom 8:16f; 1 John 3:1, 2sons of God, being sons of the resurrection. 37  But that the dead are raised, even Moses showed, in A Mark 12:26the passage about the burning bush, where he calls the Lord B Ex 3:6the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. 38  A Matt 22:32; Mark 12:27Now He is not the God of the dead but of the living; for B Rom 14:8all live to Him.” 39  Some of the scribes answered and said, “Teacher, You have spoken well.” 40 For A Matt 22:46; Luke 14:6they did not have courage to question Him any longer about anything.
41  A Luke 20:41-44: Matt 22:41-46; Mark 12:35-37Then He said to them, How is it that they say 1 I.e. the Messiahthe Christ is B Matt 9:27David’s son? 42  For David himself says in the book of Psalms,
A Ps 110:1The Lord said to my Lord,
Sit at My right hand,
43  A Ps 110:1 Until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.” ’
44  Therefore David calls Him ‘Lord,’ and how is He his son?”
45  A Luke 20:45-47: Matt 23:1-7; Mark 12:38-40And while all the people were listening, He said to the disciples, 46  Beware of the scribes, A Luke 11:43; 14:7who like to walk around in long robes, and love respectful greetings in the market places, and chief seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets, 47  who devour widows’ houses, and for appearance’s sake offer long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation.”
The Widow’s Gift
21
A Luke 21:1-4: Mark 12:41-44And He looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury. And He saw a poor widow putting 1 Lit there in A Mark 12:42two 2 Gr lepta small copper coins. And He said, Truly I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all of them; for they all out of their 1 Or abundance surplus put into the 2 Lit gifts offering; but she out of her poverty put in all 3 Lit the living that she had that she had A Mark 12:44to live on.”
A Luke 21:5-36: Matt 24; Mark 13And while some were talking about the temple, that it was adorned with beautiful stones and votive gifts, He said, As for these things which you are looking at, the days will come in which A Luke 19:44there will not be left one stone upon another which will not be torn down.”
They questioned Him, saying, “Teacher, when therefore will these things happen? And what will be the 1 Or attesting miracle sign when these things are about to take place?” And He said, See to it that you are not misled; for many will come in My name, saying, ‘A John 8:24I am He,’ and, ‘The time is near.’ B Luke 17:23Do not go after them. When you hear of wars and disturbances, do not be terrified; for these things must take place first, but the end does not follow immediately.”
Things to Come
10  Then He continued by saying to them, Nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom, 11  and there will be great earthquakes, and in various places plagues and famines; and there will be terrors and great 1 Or attesting miracles signs from heaven.
12  “But before all these things, A Luke 21:12-17: Matt 10:19-22; Mark 13:11-13they will lay their hands on you and will persecute you, delivering you to the synagogues and prisons, 1 Lit being brought bringing you before kings and governors for My name’s sake. 13  A Phil 1:12It will lead to 1 Lit a testimony for you an opportunity for your testimony. 14  A Luke 12:11So make up your minds not to prepare beforehand to defend yourselves; 15  for A Luke 12:12I will give you 1 Lit a mouth utterance and wisdom which none of your opponents will be able to resist or refute. 16  But you will be betrayed even by parents and brothers and relatives and friends, and they will put some of you to death, 17  and you will be hated by all because of My name. 18  Yet A Matt 10:30; Luke 12:7not a hair of your head will perish. 19  A Matt 10:22; 24:13; Rom 2:7; 5:3f; Heb 10:36; James 1:3; 2 Pet 1:6By your endurance you will gain your 1 Lit souls lives.
20  “But when you see Jerusalem A Luke 19:43surrounded by armies, then 1 Lit know recognize that her desolation is near. 21  Then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains, and those who are in the midst of 1 Lit her the city must leave, and A Luke 17:31those who are in the country must not enter 1 Lit her the city; 22  because these are A Is 63:4; Dan 9:24-27; Hos 9:7days of vengeance, so that all things which are written will be fulfilled. 23  Woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days; for A Dan 8:19; 1 Cor 7:26there will be great distress upon the 1 Or earth land and wrath to this people; 24  and they will fall by A Gen 34:26; Ex 17:13; Heb 11:34the edge of the sword, and will be led captive into all the nations; and B Is 63:18; Dan 8:13Jerusalem will be C Rev 11:2trampled under foot by the Gentiles until D Rom 11:25the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.
The Return of Christ
25  “There will be 1 Or attesting miracles signs in sun and moon and stars, and on the earth dismay among nations, in perplexity at the roaring of the sea and the waves, 26  men fainting from fear and the expectation of the things which are coming upon the 1 Lit inhabited earth world; for the powers of 2 Or heaven the heavens will be shaken. 27  A Matt 16:27; 24:30; 26:64; Mark 13:26Then they will see B Dan 7:13; Rev 1:7the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28  But when these things begin to take place, straighten up and lift up your heads, because A Luke 18:7your redemption is drawing near.”
29  Then He told them a parable: Behold the fig tree and all the trees; 30  as soon as they put forth leaves, you see it and A Luke 12:57know for yourselves that summer is now near. 31  So you also, when you see these things happening, 1 Lit know recognize that A Matt 3:2the kingdom of God is near. 32  Truly I say to you, this 1 Or race generation will not pass away until all things take place. 33  A Matt 5:18; Luke 16:17Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.
34  A Matt 24:42-44; Mark 4:19; Luke 12:40, 45; 1 Thess 5:2ffBe on guard, so that your hearts will not be weighted down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of life, and that day will not come on you suddenly like a trap; 35  for it will come upon all those who dwell on the face of all the earth. 36  But A Mark 13:33; Luke 12:40keep on the alert at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are about to take place, and to B Luke 1:19; Rev 7:9; 8:2; 11:4stand before the Son of Man.”
37  Now 1 Lit days during the day He was A Matt 26:55; Luke 19:47teaching in the temple, but 2 Lit nights B Mark 11:19at evening He would go out and spend the night on 3 Or the hill C Matt 21:1the mount that is called 4 Or Olive Grove Olivet. 38 And all the people would get up A John 8:2early in the morning to come to Him in the temple to listen to Him.
Preparing the Passover
22
A Luke 22:1, 2: Matt 26:2-5; Mark 14:1, 2; Ex 12:1-27Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread, which is called the B John 11:55; 13:1Passover, was approaching. The chief priests and the scribes A Matt 12:14were seeking how they might put Him to death; for they were afraid of the people.
A Luke 22:3-6: Matt 26:14-16; Mark 14:10, 11And B Matt 4:10; John 13:2, 27Satan entered into Judas who was called Iscariot, 1 Lit being of belonging to the number of the twelve. And he went away and discussed with the chief priests and A 1 Chr 9:11; Neh 11:11; Luke 22:52; Acts 4:1; 5:24, 26officers how he might betray Him to them. They were glad and agreed to give him money. So he consented, and began seeking a good opportunity to betray Him to them 1 Or without a disturbance apart from the crowd.
A Luke 22:7-13: Matt 26:17-19; Mark 14:12-16Then came the first day of Unleavened Bread on which B Mark 14:12the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. And Jesus sent A Acts 3:1, 11; 4:13, 19; 8:14; Gal 2:9Peter and John, saying, Go and prepare the Passover for us, so that we may eat it.” They said to Him, “Where do You want us to prepare it?” 10 And He said to them, When you have entered the city, a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him into the house that he enters. 11  And you shall say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you, “Where is the guest room in which I may eat the Passover with My disciples?” ’ 12  And he will show you a large, furnished upper room; prepare it there.” 13 And they left and found everything just as He had told them; and they prepared the Passover.
The Lord’s Supper
14  A Matt 26:20; Mark 14:17When the hour had come, He reclined at the table, and B Mark 6:30the apostles with Him. 15 And He said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; 16  for I say to you, I shall never again eat it A Luke 14:15; 22:18, 30; Rev 19:9until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” 17  A Luke 22:17-20: Matt 26:26-29; Mark 14:22-25; 1 Cor 11:23-25; 1 Cor 10:16And when He had taken a cup and B Matt 14:19given thanks, He said, Take this and share it among yourselves; 18  for A Matt 26:29; Mark 14:25I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine from now on until the kingdom of God comes.” 19 And when He had taken some bread and A Matt 14:19given thanks, He broke it and gave it to them, saying, This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” 20 And in the same way He took the cup after they had eaten, saying, This cup which is A Matt 26:28; Mark 14:24poured out for you is the B Ex 24:8; Jer 31:31; 1 Cor 11:25; 2 Cor 3:6; Heb 8:8, 13; 9:15new covenant in My blood. 21  A Luke 22:21-23: Matt 26:21-24; Mark 14:18-21; Ps 41:9; John 13:18, 21, 22, 26But behold, the hand of the one betraying Me is with 1 Lit Me Mine on the table. 22  For indeed, the Son of Man is going A Acts 2:23; 4:28; 10:42; 17:31as it has been determined; but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!” 23 And they began to discuss among themselves which one of them it might be who was going to do this thing.
Who Is Greatest
24 And there arose also A Mark 9:34; Luke 9:46a dispute among them as to which one of them was regarded to be greatest. 25  A Luke 22:25-27: Matt 20:25-28; Mark 10:42-45And He said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who have authority over them are calledBenefactors.’ 26  But it is not this way with you, A Matt 23:11; Mark 9:35; Luke 9:48but the one who is the greatest among you must become like B 1 Pet 5:5the youngest, and the leader like the servant. 27  For A Luke 12:37who is greater, the one who reclines at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at the table? But B Matt 20:28; John 13:12-15I am among you as the one who serves.
28  “You are those who have stood by Me in My A Heb 2:18; 4:15trials; 29  and just as My Father has granted Me a A Matt 5:3; 2 Tim 2:12kingdom, I grant you 30  that you may A Luke 22:16eat and drink at My table in My B Matt 5:3; 2 Tim 2:12kingdom, and C Matt 19:28you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
31  Simon, Simon, behold, A Job 1:6-12; 2:1-6; Matt 4:10Satan has 1 Or obtained by asking demanded permission to B Amos 9:9sift you like wheat; 32  but I A John 17:9, 15have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail; and you, when once you have turned again, B John 21:15-17strengthen your brothers.” 33  A Luke 22:33, 34: Matt 26:33-35; Mark 14:29-31; John 13:37, 38But he said to Him, “Lord, with You I am ready to go both to prison and to death!” 34 And He said, “I say to you, Peter, the rooster will not crow today until you have denied three times that you know Me.”
35 And He said to them, A Matt 10:9f; Mark 6:8; Luke 9:3ff; 10:4When I sent you out without money belt and bag and sandals, you did not lack anything, did you?” They said, “No, nothing.” 36 And He said to them, “But now, 1 Lit he who whoever has a money belt is to take it along, likewise also a bag, and 1 Lit he who whoever has no sword is to sell his 2 Or outer garment coat and buy one. 37  For I tell you that this which is written must be fulfilled in Me, ‘A Is 53:12And He was numbered with transgressors’; for B John 17:4; 19:30that which refers to Me has its 1 Lit end fulfillment.” 38 They said, “Lord, look, here are two A Luke 22:36, 49swords.” And He said to them, “It is enough.”
The Garden of Gethsemane
39  A Matt 26:30; Mark 14:26; John 18:1And He came out and proceeded B Luke 21:37as was His custom to C Matt 21:1the Mount of Olives; and the disciples also followed Him. 40  A Luke 22:40-46: Matt 26:36-46; Mark 14:32-42When He arrived at the place, He said to them, B Matt 6:13; Luke 22:46Pray that you may not enter into temptation.” 41 And He withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and He A Matt 26:39; Mark 14:35; Luke 18:11knelt down and began to pray, 42  saying, Father, if You are willing, remove this A Matt 20:22cup from Me; B Matt 26:39yet not My will, but Yours be done.” 43  1 Most early mss do not contain vv 43 and 44Now an A Matt 4:11angel from heaven appeared to Him, strengthening Him. 44 And A Heb 5:7being in agony He was praying very fervently; and His sweat became like drops of blood, falling down upon the ground. 45 When He rose from prayer, He came to the disciples and found them sleeping from sorrow, 46 and said to them, Why are you sleeping? Get up and A Luke 22:40pray that you may not enter into temptation.”
Jesus Betrayed by Judas
47  A Luke 22:47-53: Matt 26:47-56; Mark 14:43-50; John 18:3-11While He was still speaking, behold, a crowd came, and the one called Judas, one of the twelve, was preceding them; and he approached Jesus to kiss Him. 48 But Jesus said to him, Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?” 49 When those who were around Him saw what was going to happen, they said, “Lord, shall we strike with the A Luke 22:38sword?” 50 And one of them struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his right ear. 51 But Jesus answered and said, 1 Or “Let Me at least do this, and He touched Stop! No more of this.” And He touched his ear and healed him. 52  Then Jesus said to the chief priests and A Luke 22:4officers of the temple and elders who had come against Him, “Have you come out with swords and clubs B Luke 22:37as you would against a robber? 53  While I was with you daily in the temple, you did not lay hands on Me; but 1 Lit this is your hour and power of darkness this hour and the power of darkness are yours.”
Jesus’ Arrest
54  A Matt 26:57; Mark 14:53Having arrested Him, they led Him away and brought Him to the house of the high priest; but B Matt 26:58; Mark 14:54; John 18:15Peter was following at a distance. 55  A Luke 22:55-62: Matt 26:69-75; Mark 14:66-72; John 18:16-18, 25-27After they had kindled a fire in the middle of B Matt 26:3the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter was sitting among them. 56 And a servant-girl, seeing him as he sat in the firelight and looking intently at him, said, “This man was with Him too.” 57 But he denied it, saying, “Woman, I do not know Him.” 58 A little later, A John 18:26another saw him and said, “You are one of them too!” But Peter said, “Man, I am not!” 59 After about an hour had passed, another man began to insist, saying, “Certainly this man also was with Him, A Matt 26:73; Mark 14:70for he is a Galilean too.” 60 But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are talking about.” Immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed. 61  A Luke 7:13The Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had told him, B Luke 22:34Before a rooster crows today, you will deny Me three times.” 62 And he went out and wept bitterly.
63  A Matt 26:67f; Mark 14:65; John 18:22fNow the men who were holding 1 Lit Him Jesus in custody were mocking Him and beating Him, 64 and they blindfolded Him and were asking Him, saying, “A Matt 26:68; Mark 14:65Prophesy, who is the one who hit You?” 65 And they were saying many other things against Him, A Matt 27:39blaspheming.

For we have heard it ourselves from His own mouth.”
Jesus before Pilate
23
Then the whole body of them got up and A Matt 27:2; Mark 15:1; John 18:28brought Him before Pilate. A Luke 23:2, 3: Matt 27:11-14; Mark 15:2-5; John 18:29-37And they began to accuse Him, saying, “We found this man B Luke 23:14misleading our nation and C Luke 20:22; John 18:33ff; 19:12; Acts 17:7forbidding to pay taxes to Caesar, and saying that He Himself is 1 I.e. When Pilate heard it, he asked whether the man was a Galilean. And when he learned that He belonged to Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent Him to A Matt 14:1; Mark 6:14; Luke 3:1; 9:7; 13:31Herod, who himself also was in Jerusalem 1 Lit in these days at that time.
Jesus before Herod

And he questioned Him 1 Lit in many words at some length; but A Matt 27:12, 14; Mark 15:5; John 19:9He answered him nothing. 10 And the chief priests and the scribes were standing there, accusing Him vehemently. 11 And Herod with his soldiers, after treating Him with contempt and mocking Him, A Matt 27:28dressed Him in a gorgeous robe and sent Him back to Pilate. 12  Now A Acts 4:27Herod and Pilate became friends with one another that very day; for before they had been enemies with each other.

13  Pilate summoned the chief priests and the A Luke 23:35; John 7:26, 48; 12:42; Acts 3:17; 4:5, 8; 13:27rulers and the people, 14 and said to them, “You brought this man to me as one who A Luke 23:2incites the people to rebellion, and behold, having examined Him before you, I B Luke 23:4have found no guilt in this man regarding the charges which you make against Him. 15  No, nor has A Luke 9:9Herod, for he sent Him back to us; and behold, nothing deserving death has been done by Him. 16  Therefore I will A Matt 27:26; Mark 15:15; Luke 23:22; John 19:1; Acts 16:37punish Him and release Him.” 17 [1 Early mss do not contain this vNow he was obliged to release to them at the feast one prisoner.]
18 But they cried out all together, saying, “A Luke 23:18-25: Matt 27:15-26; Mark 15:6-15; John 18:39-19:16Away with this man, and release for us Barabbas!” 19 (He was one who had been thrown into prison for an insurrection made in the city, and for murder.) 20  Pilate, wanting to release Jesus, addressed them again, 21 but they kept on calling out, saying, “Crucify, crucify Him!” 22 And he said to them the third time, “Why, what evil has this man done? I have found in Him no guilt demanding death; therefore I will A Luke 23:16punish Him and release Him.” 23 But they were insistent, with loud voices asking that He be crucified. And their voices began to prevail. 24 And Pilate pronounced sentence that their demand be granted. 25 And he released the man they were asking for who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, but he delivered Jesus to their will.

The Resurrection
24
A Luke 24:1-10: Matt 28:1-8; Mark 16:1-8; John 20:1-8But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared. And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of A Luke 7:13; Acts 1:21the Lord Jesus. While they were perplexed about this, behold, A John 20:12two men suddenly B Luke 2:9; Acts 12:7stood near them in dazzling clothing; and as the women were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living One among the dead? He is not here, but He A Mark 16:6has 1 Or been raised risen. Remember how He spoke to you B Matt 17:22f; Mark 9:30f; Luke 9:44; 24:44while He was still in Galilee, saying that A Matt 16:21; Luke 24:46the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.” And A John 2:22they remembered His words, and returned from the tomb and reported all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. 10  Now they were A Matt 27:56Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James; also the other women with them were telling these things to B Mark 6:30the apostles. 11 But these words appeared 1 Lit in their sight to them as nonsense, and they A Mark 16:11would not believe them. 12 But Peter got up and A John 20:3-6ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he *saw the linen wrappings 1 Or by themselves only; and he went away B John 20:10to his home, marveling at what had happened.
The Road to Emmaus
13 And behold, A Mark 16:12two of them were going that very day to a village named Emmaus, which was 1 Lit 60 stadia; one stadion was about 600 ftabout seven miles from Jerusalem. 14 And they were talking with each other about all these things which had taken place. 15  While they were talking and discussing, Jesus Himself approached and began traveling with them. 16 But A Luke 24:31; John 20:14; 21:4their eyes were prevented from recognizing Him. 17 And He said to them, What are these words that you are exchanging with one another as you are walking?” And they stood still, looking sad. 18  One of them, named Cleopas, answered and said to Him, “Are You 1 Or visiting Jerusalem alone the only one visiting Jerusalem and unaware of the things which have happened here in these days?” 19 And He said to them, What things?” And they said to Him, “The things about A Mark 1:24Jesus the Nazarene, who was a B Matt 21:11prophet mighty in deed and word in the sight of God and all the people, 20 and how the chief priests and our A Luke 23:13rulers delivered Him to the sentence of death, and crucified Him. 21 But we were hoping that it was He who was going to A Luke 1:68redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, it is the third day since these things happened. 22 But also some women among us amazed us. A Luke 24:1ffWhen they were at the tomb early in the morning, 23 and did not find His body, they came, saying that they had also seen a vision of angels who said that He was alive. 24  Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just exactly as the women also had said; but Him they did not see.” 25 And He said to them, O foolish men and slow of heart to believe in all that A Matt 26:24the prophets have spoken! 26  A Luke 24:7, 44ff; Heb 2:10; 1 Pet 1:11Was it not necessary for the 1 I.e. 28 And they approached the village where they were going, and A Mark 6:48He acted as though He were going farther. 29 But they urged Him, saying, “Stay with us, for it is getting toward evening, and the day 1 Lit has now declined is now nearly over.” So He went in to stay with them. 30  When He had reclined at the table with them, He took the bread and A Matt 14:19blessed it, and breaking it, He began giving it to them. 31  Then their A Luke 24:16eyes were opened and they recognized Him; and He vanished from 1 Lit them their sight. 32 They said to one another, “1 Lit Was not our heart Were not our hearts burning within us while He was speaking to us on the road, while He A Luke 24:45was 2 Lit opening explaining the Scriptures to us?” 33 And they got up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem, and A Mark 16:13found gathered together the eleven and B Acts 1:14those who were with them, 34  saying, “A Luke 24:6The Lord has really risen and B 1 Cor 15:5has appeared to Simon.” 35 They began to relate 1 Lit the things their experiences on the road and how A Luke 24:30fHe was recognized by them in the breaking of the bread.
Other Appearances
36 While they were telling these things, A Mark 16:14He Himself stood in their midst and *said to them, Peace be to you.” 37 But they were startled and frightened and thought that they were seeing A Matt 14:26; Mark 6:49a spirit. 38 And He said to them, Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your 1 Lit heart hearts? 39  A John 20:20, 27See My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself; B John 20:27; 1 John 1:1touch Me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.” 40 And when He had said this, He showed them His hands and His feet. 41 While they still 1 Lit were disbelieving A Luke 24:11could not believe it because of their joy and amazement, He said to them, B John 21:5Have you anything here to eat?” 42 They gave Him a piece of a broiled fish; 43 and He took it and A Acts 10:41ate it before them.
44  Now He said to them, A Luke 9:22, 44f; 18:31-34; 22:37These are My words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things which are written about Me in the B Luke 24:27Law of Moses and the Prophets and C Ps 2:7ff [Acts 13:33]; Ps 16:10 [Acts 2:27]; Ps 22:1-18 [Matt 27:34-46]; Ps 69:1-21 [John 19:28ff]; Ps 72; 110:1 [Matt 22:43f]; Ps 118:22f [Matt 21:42]the Psalms must be fulfilled.” 45  Then He A Luke 24:32; Acts 16:14; 1 John 5:20opened their 1 Lit mind minds to understand the Scriptures, 46 and He said to them, A Luke 24:26, 44Thus it is written, that the 1 I.e.

18
Ἔλεγεν δὲ παραβολὴν αὐτοῖς πρὸς τὸ δεῖν πάντοτε προσεύχεσθαι αὐτοὺς καὶ μὴ ἐνκακεῖν, λέγων· κριτής τις ἦν ἔν τινι πόλει τὸν θεὸν μὴ φοβούμενος καὶ ἄνθρωπον μὴ ἐντρεπόμενος. χήρα δὲ ἦν ἐν τῇ πόλει ἐκείνῃ, καὶ ἤρχετο πρὸς αὐτὸν λέγουσα· ἐκδίκησόν με ἀπὸ τοῦ ἀντιδίκου μου. καὶ οὐκ ἤθελεν ἐπὶ χρόνον· μετὰ δὲ ταῦτα εἶπεν ἐν ἑαυτῷ· εἰ καὶ τὸν θεὸν οὐ φοβοῦμαι οὐδὲ ἄνθρωπον ἐντρέπομαι, διά γε τὸ παρέχειν μοι κόπον τὴν χήραν ταύτην, ἐκδικήσω αὐτήν, ἵνα μὴ εἰς τέλος ἐρχομένη ὑπωπιάζῃ με. εἶπεν δὲ κύριος, ἀκούσατε τί κριτὴς τῆς ἀδικίας λέγει· δὲ θεὸς οὐ μὴ ποιήσῃ τὴν ἐκδίκησιν τῶν ἐκλεκτῶν αὐτοῦ τῶν βοώντων αὐτῷ ἡμέρας καὶ νυκτός, καὶ μακροθυμεῖ ἐπ’ αὐτοῖς; λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι ποιήσει τὴν ἐκδίκησιν αὐτῶν ἐν τάχει. πλὴν υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐλθὼν ἆρα εὑρήσει τὴν πίστιν ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς;
