Birth of John the Baptist Foretold

And he had a wife from the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. 18 And Zechariah said to the angel,oGen. 15:8; [Gen. 17:17] “How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in years. ” 19 And the angel answered him, “I ampver. 26; Dan. 8:16; 9:21 Gabriel,qRev. 8:2; [1 Kgs. 17:1; Job 1:6; Isa. 63:9; Matt. 18:10] who stands in the presence of God, and I was sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news. 20 And behold,r[Ezek. 3:26; 24:27] you will be silent and unable to speak until the day that these things take place, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time. ” 21 And the people were waiting for Zechariah, and they were wondering at his delay insSee ver. 9 the temple. 22 And when he came out, he was unable to speak to them, and they realized that he had seen a vision ins[See ver. 21 above] the temple. 24 After these days his wife Elizabeth conceived, and for five months she kept herself hidden, saying, 25 “Thus the Lord has done for me in the days when he looked on me,w[Gen. 30:23; 1 Sam. 1:6; Ps. 113:9; Isa. 4:1] to take away my reproach among people. ”

Birth of Jesus Foretold

26 In the sixth month the angelxver. 19 Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee namedySee Matt. 2:23 Nazareth, 27 zMatt. 1:16, 18 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph,ach. 2:4; Matt. 1:20 of the house of David. And the virgin's name was Mary. 28 And he came to her and said, “Greetings,b[Ps. 45:2; Dan. 9:23] O favored one,cJudg. 6:12 the Lord is with you! ” 29 ButdSee ver. 12 she was greatly troubled at the saying, and tried to discern what sort of greeting this might be. 30 And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, foreActs 7:46 you have found favor with God. 31 And behold,fIsa. 7:14 you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, andgch. 2:21; Matt. 1:21, 25 you shall call his name Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son ofhver. 76; ch. 6:35; Acts 7:48; See Mark 5:7 the Most High. 34 And Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin? ”

35 And the angel answered her,lMatt. 1:18, 20 “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power ofh[See ver. 32 above] the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be calledmJohn 6:69 holy—nSee Matt. 14:33 the Son of God. 36 And behold, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son, and this is the sixth month with herover. 7 who was called barren. 37 ForpCited from Gen. 18:14 (Gk.); See Matt. 19:26 nothing will be impossible with God. ” 38 And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word. ” Andq[Judg. 6:21; Acts 12:10] the angel departed from her.

Mary Visits Elizabeth

39 In those days Mary arose and went with haste intorver. 65; Josh. 20:7; 21:11 the hill country, to a town in Judah, 40 and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. 41 And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby leaped in her womb. And Elizabethsver. 15, 67 was filled with the Holy Spirit, 42 and she exclaimed with a loud cry,t[Judg. 5:24] “Blessed are you among women, andu[Deut. 28:4] blessed isvPs. 127:3 the fruit of your womb! 43 And why is this granted to me that the mother ofwch. 20:42; John 20:28; [ch. 2:11] my Lord should come to me? 44 For behold, when the sound of your greeting came to my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. 45 AndxJohn 20:29; [ver. 20] blessed is she who believed that there would be1Or believed, for there will be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord. ”

56 And Mary remained with her about three months and returned to her home.

The Birth of John the Baptist

57 Now the time came for Elizabeth to give birth, and she bore a son. 58 And her neighbors and relatives heard that the LordsGen. 19:19 had shown great mercy to her, and they rejoiced with her. 59 Andtch. 2:21; Gen. 17:12; Lev. 12:3; Phil. 3:5 on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child.
