Judgment on False Teachers

Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about ourfTitus 1:4 common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to youg1 Tim. 6:12; 2 Tim. 4:7; [Luke 13:24; 1 Cor. 9:25; Phil. 1:27] to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints. Forh2 Pet. 2:1 certain peoplei[Gal. 2:4] have crept in unnoticedj1 Pet. 2:8 who long ago were designated for this condemnation, ungodly people, who pervertkSee Acts 11:23 the grace of our God into sensuality andlTitus 1:16; 2 Pet. 2:1; 1 John 2:22 deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.

Now I wantm2 Pet. 1:12; 3:17 to remind you, although you once fully knew it, thatn[1 Cor. 10:4, 5, 9] Jesus, who saved a people out of the land of Egypt,oNum. 14:29, 37; 26:64, 65; Ps. 106:26; Heb. 3:17-19 afterward destroyed those who did not believe. Andp2 Pet. 2:4; [Rev. 20:2] the angels who did not stay within their own position of authority, but left their proper dwelling, he has kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness until the judgment of the great day— just asqSee Gen. 19:24 Sodom and Gomorrah andrDeut. 29:23; Hos. 11:8 the surrounding cities, which likewise indulged in sexual immorality ands2 Pet. 2:10 pursued unnatural desire, serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire.

Yet in like manner these people also, relying on their dreams, defile the flesh, reject authority, andt2 Pet. 2:10 blaspheme the glorious ones. But whenu1 Thess. 4:16; [2 Pet. 2:11] the archangelvDan. 10:13; 12:1; Rev. 12:7 Michael, contending with the devil, was disputingw[Deut. 34:6] about the body of Moses, he did not presume to pronounce a blasphemous judgment, but said,xZech. 3:2 “The Lord rebuke you. ” 10 y2 Pet. 2:12 But these people blaspheme all that they do not understand, and they are destroyed by all that they, like unreasoning animals, understand instinctively. 11 Woe to them! 14 It was also about these that Enoch,lGen. 5:18 the seventh from Adam, prophesied, saying,mSee Deut. 33:2; [Dan. 7:10; Mark 8:38; 1 Thess. 3:13; 2 Thess. 1:7] “Behold, the Lord came with ten thousands of his holy ones, 15 n[2 Pet. 2:5] to execute judgment on all and to convict all the ungodly of all their deeds of ungodliness that they haveo2 Pet. 2:6 committed in such an ungodly way, and of allp1 Sam. 2:3; Ps. 94:4; John 6:60 the harsh things that ungodly sinners have spoken against him. ” 16 These are grumblers, malcontents,q2 Pet. 2:10 following their own sinful desires;r2 Pet. 2:18 they are loud-mouthed boasters,sLev. 19:15; Deut. 10:17 showing favoritism to gain advantage.

A Call to Persevere

17 But you mustt2 Pet. 3:2 remember, beloved, the predictions of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ. 18 They1Or Christ, because they said to you,u2 Pet. 3:3 “In the last time there will be scoffers, following their own ungodly passions. ” 19 It is these who cause divisions, worldly people,v[Rom. 8:9; Phil. 3:3] devoid of the Spirit. 20 But you, beloved,wSee Col. 2:7 build yourselves up in your most holy faith;xEph. 6:18; [Rom. 8:26] pray in the Holy Spirit; 21 y2 Cor. 13:14; [Acts 13:43] keep yourselves in the love of God,zTitus 2:13; 2 Pet. 3:12 waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life. 22 And have mercy on those who doubt; 23 save others byaAmos 4:11; Zech. 3:2 snatching them out ofbSee 1 Cor. 3:15 the fire; to others show mercyc[2 Cor. 5:11] with fear, hating evendRev. 3:4; [Zech. 3:4] the garment stained by the flesh.
